I agree.

Agree that bad coaching can mess up an otherwise good team. And when a team underachieves the first place most people look is the coach. Sometimes the change improves things but many times it doesn't.

Now the Pacers will have to decide whether continuity or the potential to upgrade the coaching position would benefit the team more. Vogel's results seem to say there is limited upside to a coaching change.

I would rather see Derrick Rose join the Pacers than any coach who ever lived. :) :sigh:

I think coaches can ruin a team, sure. But, if a team is gelling well, a coach can only marginally improve them. A bad coach can be much more detrimental than a good coach can be helpful.

Sounds odd, I know.

While I do agree that, especially in today's league, coaches are primarily a product of their roster. However, I do feel that there are a certain crop of special coaches who can do a lot more with less. Coaches like Doug Collins, Rick Adelman, Hubie Brown, Larry Brown, and George Karl have proved it, as a lot of their teams have overachieved compared to their roster on paper. Even guys like Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan and Phil Jackson qualify too. LIke with Jackson, while he's obviously a great basketball mind, but he's also had the benefit of coaching some all-time greats like MJ, Kobe, Shaq and Pippen. Without even one of them, would he still be a Hall of Fame coach? Yes. Would he be sitting on 11 championships? Doubtful.

but I'm fine with Vogel.
He's been doing a hell of a job in the playoffs so far.

Same number of playoff wins as JOB. Just saying...his effort has been admirable, but no results. They dont ask how you won, they ask if you won. No way around that one.

I agree whole heartedly with Scoot. JOB killed this team because when you look at our roster, we have alot of young talented players (Collison, Danny, Roy, Rush, PG, Tyler to an extent...) Just based on talent alone I felt we were good enough to at least be in the playoffs. Hats off to Vogel for at least recognizing it and letting the players play and just motivating them instead of forcing a style on them.

I'd agree that a team's success is more a reflection of its roster than any coaching. In fact, I'd say most coaches in the NBA are roughly the same although there are a few really good ones.

The problem with O'Brien is that he played an untraditional offensive style (chucking up threes with reckless abandon) that just didn't fit our roster. I think almost any other coach in the NBA except maybe D'Antoni would've had us playing a more traditional offensive game.
