^^ I agree. The biggest mistake you can make is assume that your core of talented but non-superstar players can end up being anything other than NBA mediocrity.
I don't mean that as disrespect, and I can't claim I know it all about the NBA, but I've experienced both sides of the equation. If you asked me in 2004 whether I would enjoy the Bulls as a 4-8 seed team in the weaker conference that works hard to overcome talent deficiencies, I would have taken it happily. The Bulls had a core of young players (Hinrich, Gordon, Deng, Chandler, Curry, Duhon, Nocioni) and it seemed like the sky was the limit. We assumed we would just keep growing better and better. But we didn't. We maxed out, and we waited too long and started to go the other way.
It was only by the grace of God that we managed to miss the playoffs in the one year that we were going to overcome all the odds and get the #1 pick with a 1.7% chance at getting it. And when we got Rose, I felt dumb for thinking any of those guys were going to be superstars. From day 1, Rose had it.
I'm kind of rambling and offering no value to the Pacers board with my Bulls ranting, so I'll bring it back on point. The point in, hope that your GM doesn't wait a year too long, because I know we got lucky doing so. I'm not saying you need a big 3, but unless you guys thing Paul George is a superstar, do not consider any of your players untouchable for a superstar. You will not win crap without one. Granger would be an amazing number 2....one of the best #2's in the league if he could get a legit superstar around him.
It might be fun to be a 4-5 seed and lose in the 1st and 2nd round a couple of times in a row but after that it just sucks. So keep tinkering until you get to where you need to be. I think this team's ceiling as constructed is 50 wins and a 2nd round appearance. Use that cap space nicely nad make the right moves and you have a ton of the pieces in place for a championship roster.
Oh and thank you for being physical and throwing elbows around. I don't necessarily call them cheap shots. None of them where pre-ordaned, none of them were intended (I dont think) to injure a player. They were just physical basketball plays. You clearly got in our heads at some points, and somehow taught us a little bit about playoff basketball. I am not sure if you will take this with pride or as a 'whatever', but you made us a better playoff basketball team by virtue of playing you. We definitely gained something by playing the Pacers, and that's something I didn't expect.
