Question on signing RFA's like Gordon in 2012.

How about this Gordon is a RFA, he signs a $12 million or even a max contract offer sheet with Indiana, say 3yrs $12 million per year with a player option in year 2 and 3? NOLA matches it and Gordon plays one season with the Hornets and then Opts out becoming a UFA!


Ok my question was IF the Pacers sign him to an offer sheet, NOLA can match it or decline right? What if NOLA offers contract with out the player option? Does Gordon have to take that offer or the Max by Indiana with a Player option each year after the first? NOLA would have to match it if Gordon signed the offer sheet right? And then if Gordon wanted to opt out he could after year one. Is there anything that prevents that?

I could be wrong, but I believe this is the way it would work for Gordon.

The Hornets would have to offer him the $7 million that he is due for the 2012-13 season to keep his rights. That is entirely the Hornets decision.

The Pacers could then offer him the contract that you stated. The Hornets would have the opportunity to meet OR beat that contract. Gordon would then have the option of playing 1 more season at $7 million in NO and then becoming an unrestricted FA or sign with NO and stay there another few years. If he resigns with the Hornets (I can't see that happening) the only way the Pacers may be able to get him would be via a sign and trade. He would sign with the Hornets and the Pacers would trade for him.

In my humble opinion, Gordon will not resign with NO. He will most likely be traded. If not he will play next year at $7 million and then become an unrestricted free agent. In any case, the Pacers will have a good chance to get him by the summer of 2013 at the LATEST.

I thought Gordo's QO was $5.1 million? But can we negotiate with him as an RFA? If we sign him to an offer sheet does NOLA just have to match that? If so why not offer Gordon the Farm give him a max offer with an opt out in yr 2, 3, and 4 then attempt an S&T if that doesn't work and NOLA wont trade him, he can Opt out because he has the Player Option in yr 2, and become a UFA and sign with whoever he wants.

I think it may be a good idea to offer him a large amount in the first year and give him the opportunity to opt out in year 2. That way if NOLA meets our offer, he can still become an UFA after 1 year.

I may give him the opportunity to opt out in year 2 with a team option for years 3 & 4 if he is still with NOLA.

If the Pacers manage to get him in a trade or sign and trade, that may be a different story.

I understand the dream, but Gordon's going to take the best deal he can get. It will be a max offer sheet (most likely) and you would assume that NO will match it pretty fast.

The only way to likely get him is to trade.
