Kendal Marshall

Post#1 » by 8305 » Wed Jun 6, 2012 3:03 pm

Is this a guy we should think about moving up to draft?

Opinions on him are all over the board. Some project him as a career backup, others call him Ricky Rubio light, still others say he's better than Rubio. What we know is the Pacers are not a good passing team and Kendall Marshall is a good passer. In fact he is the best passer that's been seen since advanced passing statistics in college basketball have been accumluated according to Draftexpress.

He is not a good defender by any account. But, of any team the Pacers with George Hill and Paul George are pretty well equiped to help cover that flaw. We also have a collection of guys who would seem to benefit from having a great passing, pass first point guard.

So could a package of Collison, Hansbrough and pick 26 be enough to move high enough in this draft to take this guy? Maybe New Orleans at pick 10 or Portland at pick 14? Or, are we too far along to be adding core pieces this young to our team? That package and the rookie salary would be alot cheaper than the potential free agent acquisitions who would upgrade us at this position. Having George Hill around to cover for him on bad nights would also be a good thing.

wouldn't be my first choice even though I think he'll be a good player. what let us down was our second unit and Collison was the one bright light there. I'd consider trading Hansbrough and the 26 to move up but between Collison and Hill I think we're okay at the point.

By the way, isn't the Portland pick 11? looks like Houston is 14 and 16. they both have multiple picks and might be willing to trade down from the lower one.

We just worked out a bunch of players who I like on paper and should be available at the 26, but we have no idea what our coaches thought of them. pacers.com chose to feature Royce White after the workout but he's one you'd probably have to trade up to get. whether the rest were good enough to stay put for is something we won't know until draft night.

No desire to acquire Marshall not only is he a bad defender , he's not a very good shooter either. Why would you trade 3 assets to get him?

Marshall will never be a defender but I expect he will improve as a shooter. And this suggestion is based on the notion that someone who could make it easier for Granger, George, west and Hibbert to find shots is the last piece to making this team really good.

By the sounds of it we are looking to take the next step forward, not back. Marshall would be a downgrade from our current point guard situation and acquiring him would weaken our bench considerably, that is the opposite of what management is saying they are looking to do.

I agree with you that he will be a good player, but were not in the market for a rookie point guard.

We'll need to take on a bad contract to move up into the 10-16 range.

I'm reminded of OKC trading 21+26 and getting 11+mo pete from NOH. or OKC taking harpring and maynor for, like, a 2nd rounder.

Problem is we can't really afford a bad contract. Here's some spitball ideas:

Hansbrough, Jones, 26 for Okafor/10?

Hansbrough, Jones, 26 for Udrih/Gooden/12?

Jones, 26 for Childress/13? Or, hansbrough/jones/26 for Frye/13?

My latest thought on this. I still like Kendal Marshall for the Pacers and as jawglenn noted the way to get this done is with cap space. The problem is I don't see teams motivated by cap space until you get to Dallas at pick 17. The odds probably aren't that great that Marshall falls to this point but I don't think it's totally out of the question. So for purposes of this trade i'm assuming he does.

Pacers trade pick 26 and Derron Collison
Mav's trade pick 17 and Shawn Marion

Dallas gets a solid rotation guy, a cross between Jason Terry and JJ Berea on a cheap contract. Jeff Taylor would probably be there at 26 and he's a Carlisle type guy. And this move creates 6-7 mil in cap space. That's a three for two move and Dallas will have multiple roster spits to fill if they are able to sign Williams.

Looks to me like Shawn Marion can still play. He could back up both Granger and West and upgrade our bench. If Marshall works out the Pacers win this exchange pretty nicely.

Eh, if we're responsible for helping Dallas clear enough cap space to sign Deron Williams, I want more than just to trade up 9 spots. I want to keep my pick, and maybe even add in someone else like Pendergraph (where's the minutes at the 4 for him if we have Marion and Hansbrough?).

Meh, I'm not opposed but I wouldn't give up the farm for him. DC for Marshall I could live with.

It doesn't look to me like Dallas needs to make this trade to have the cap space to sign Williams fwiw. What we would really be doing for Dallas is giving them a cheap functional guy on a rookie contract to pair with whoever they might sign with the 5 or 6 mil in cap space the trade produces. The veteran they would add might be marginally better than Marion. For this you hope they are willing to move down 9 slots in the draft.

Now the Pacers may like their existing team so much that any trade they make will have be one sided in their favor. If so fine. But, I think that's what your tweaks create.
