Anthony Tolliver

Post#1 » by SmashMouthRod » Wed Aug 8, 2012 7:02 pm

The Cavaliers and Pacers have also expressed interest in Tolliver.

Considering that the FO has contacted another SF/PF prospect. Its safe to bet that they will likely sign one of these combo forwards. I personally think that he's more of a SF. And with the teams depth at the position it's likely he wont play. I dont know how well he can defend the PF position. He is a knock down three point shooter; maybe they could stick him in the game for 5 minutes just to shoot a couple of 3's and sit back down; similar to how NY uses Novak. Thoughts?

Personally, I like Donte Greene a little better because from what I know, Greene is a little quicker and longer.

Either one would be fine considering their likely pay and role, but if I had my choice, I'd take Greene. Tolliver got a lot of burn early on in Minnesota (for whatever reason) over Kevin Love before Love really took off. So Tolliver is pretty much in the "you know what you're gonna get" category. Greene could be a stealthy pickup.

Greene, Tolliver, and then Josh Howard.

Best guess is that they are looking for a physical SF. George and Greene simply don't cut it against more physical SF's like Anthony and esp. Lebron James at 230-240 respectively.

Only problem is that they are looking for a James Posey kind of player in that bunch and it ain't happening.

They need to look at a physical SF at the vet minimum probably someone who has been in the league a good while.

Tolliver is one of the closest players to James Posey in mold today, just can't play SF, but he's a big foward who has the length and enoguh body to be effective at PF as already proven... not as seasoned as Posey, or as adequate a passer, or established obviously... but in terms of being a big foward that is a notable threat from three point land (despite last season he's shown more than enough he's clutch and can shoot the three), defend actively and very effectively, rebound the ball, hustle, and is mentally tough? Tolliver's the guy a team should add. He'll stretch the floor, hit big shots, and do the subtle things that go unseen more than not.

He'd be a damn good addition to any team's bench, but especially a younger team like Indiana.

I don't know why the Spurs haven't brought him back since he did well with the Warriors and Wolves, to replace Matt Bonner who's awful against pressure in the playoffs.

Tolliver's not exactly a great defender. He fouls in bunches, but he knows how and when to foul effectively. He can't man up against guys, and doesn't have great reach to make up for mistakes.

While I actually like Tolly, as a Wolves fan, he is not a good rebounder. He gives up a lot of rebounds, it was very frustrating since he is a solid defender he just couldn't always finish the defensive possession. He takes a lot of charges, he was a bit streaky last year as a shooter (could be because he was banged up), but he is a solid bench guy.

This late in the offseason, although the many rumors, I'd doubt the Pacers will sign another player. They seem to be content with who they have, although it couldn't hurt to get a 3rd string PG.

I'd really be surprised if they signed anyone else because by this point if they haven't found anyone to "wow" them enough to sign yet, I doubt they will find someone that will "wow" them enough.

Tolliver is worth more than the vet min, so I can understand why he is asking for it. He's a stretch big. They start at 2 million a year.

Yeah, he'll latch on somewhere. I'm just not sure we have so much space with already adding Plumlee and Mahinmi already this off-season. Unless we offload Hansbrough or Pendergraph somewhere, I just don't know that we need another body, even if he does bring a different skill set.

At this point, I just don't think the Pacers will sign anyone else. I think our offseason is basically over.

Might we trade for someone at the deadline, like we did with Barbosa? Sure.

But right now, we're going to go in with our 10-man rotation - hill/george/granger/west/hibbert with augustin/stephenson/green/hansbrough/mahinmi - and see how it plays out.

Give garbage time burn to plumlee, pendergraph, orlando johnson, to find out if they will be part of our plans at all.

Then re-assess closer to the deadline when it's clearer what our needs are.

I think we'll see one more signing before training camp; likely a 3rd/developmental PG. If you look around the NBA, there just haven't been many signings since after the first two weeks of free agency, but a ton of teams still have holes to fill or are short on players to fill required roster spots.

This just seems to be the way free agency is going in the new CBA. Middling to low minute veterans are being forced to take vet minimum deals, whereas in the past they would've gotten 3/$5m kind of deals.

I've never really seen him play, so I can't attest to him. I'd think we'd have bigger holes on the wings or at PG.

Donte Greene, who was expected to sign with Brooklyn on a non-guaranteed deal, has fractured his ankle in a workout in Charlotte. Looks like he will now be available to sign mid-season if we so deem it necessary.

Although Indiana may have interest in him, as I have said on another thread, it's probably not worth signing a wing player to allow our rookies and new FA pickups to get more minutes to solidify with our core.

Although, if Indiana DID decided to sign another player, it should definitely be a developmental PG, not a James Posey mold as everyone was suggesting here.
