Changed the topic title since they are no longer finalizing the deal but have agreed upon.

After seeing Tiago Splitter get a 4 year 36 mil contract I wonder if we overpaid a bit per year.

Re: David West, Pacers Agree On Three-Year, $36M Deal
Any complaints about this contract is silly. Absolutely silly. There's no other word for it.
This team had not had a winning season in 6 years. He shows up and we're 91-56 in the last 2 years. That's not a coincidence. He is the team leader and heart of this team, besides averaging near All Star numbers. Before he got here after losing the players would sit in the locker room and pour over the box scores making fun of anyone who had a bad game. That doesn't happen now because West doesn't approve of it. He took a group of immature kids and showed them how to be pro's.
Not to mention his game isn't based on any above average athleticism. Like Tim Duncan his game will be fine as he ages. Getting older to David West isn't like taking Blake Griffins athleticism away. He will be an effective player in the NBA past this contract.

This is well-said. The cause for concern
is likely the re-upping we have to do
for PG and Lance past this year.
Since DWest has a cap hold of $13M, maybe
that's where the contract starts, going on
$12M, then $11M for his player option.
Could also be an even $12M or, better,
a $14M-$12M-$10M spread. Nonetheless,
I think what the signing signals is appreciation
for what he did and valuing his leadership
which is something you can't put a price on
in this league.

Re: David West, Pacers Agree On Three-Year, $36M Deal
A couple of years ago I thought West was crazy to opt out of his contract because of the injury. Man was I wrong. When it is all said and done he will have earned $56 mill from our franchise alone. That is $56 million earned after his prime years mind you.
It will be cool seeing him retire a Pacer.

Re: David West, Pacers Agree On Three-Year, $36M Deal
I'm guessing the contract doesn't pay as much in year three since it is a player option. why give him a chance to opt out of a year that is the same price as the other years? I'd think the team would want to be able to opt out of a high price and a player would want to be able to opt out of a low price and test the market.

eh. No matter how its prices, it's going to be $12m on the books in 2014, the year that really matters.Wizop wrote:I'm guessing the contract doesn't pay as much in year three since it is a player option. why give him a chance to opt out of a year that is the same price as the other years? doesn't have to be. we don't know the tax level yet but we can go up to 4 mm past it. there is a pretty good summary of our options on The Bleacher Report although he fails to factor Granger in properly in figuring our depth at shooting guard because he misses the fact that Danny gives us the option to play Paul more at the two which makes OJ our third if not the fourth option there and not the second.
my point is that there is no reason to assume the deal is 12/12/12. going as high as possible while avoiding tax in year one, lessens the tax problem in year two. the deal could be something like 20/10/6 or 16/14/6. from David's point of view it is the total of the first two years that really matters. how it is divided should be immaterial and with year three being a player option, he can take the risk of a lower amount then knowing he could opt out and renegotiate if he's healthy. so the more we can pay David in 2013/14, the less his salary in 2014/15 will limit our ability to keep Lance and Danny. I leave out Paul figuring he's going to get a max deal and the free agents will have to divide what's left below tax land.

. I'd like to see the link, but it doesn't appear possible. Anything at $17m or more this year puts us over the luxury tax, something we said we wouldn't do.Wizop wrote:Scoot McGroot wrote:No matter how it prices, it's going to be $12m on the books in 2014, the year that really matters.

Other than that, as an early bird guy, Wests raises AND decreases can be a max of 7.5% of he first year salary. Ultimately, it's either structured 11/12/13 or 13/12/11. Not much other choices.

Re: David West, Pacers Agree On Three-Year, $36M Deal
He's got some issue. As of right now, we are not locked into using the BAE (and automatically invoking the hard cap at the apron of $75.5m). Say we sign Copeland as our last addition for less than $3m, we could fit Cope and Watson into the MLE, using that instead of the BAE, save the BAE for next year, and this not invoke the hard cap.
Also, he assumes we'd treat the apron as our hard cap when we've made it clear we aren't going over the luxury tax line at all.

I obviously love this. Now, we just gotta figure out our backup PF situation. Saw a lot of Chris Copeland buzz a few days into free agency, but haven't heard much in a while. Any updates?

He's considering offers from us, The Lakers, and Cleveland. He would still like the Knicks, but with the re-signing of Prigioni taking up most of their tax MLE, they can't match an offer. Also. Bargs is his replacement at 4 times the likely cost.

Since there really hasn't been a West-centered post in this thread for 5 days, I'm going to let this one free to the forums.
