unless you meet certain exceptions a max contract is limited to 25% of the cap. by making the 3rd team two times, PG became eligible for a max contract up to 30% of the cap. the figures aren't public but the story was that he agreed to something in between and that it was believed to be 27%. you are allowed to write the contract to say that the amount will increase if the exception is met later which is what just happened here.

So it's a good thing that he took the 27% so it will still give us room to resign lance?

I wonder if this affects Scola's fate at all. Because all of the projected cap room I saw for the team was (presumably) without George's bonuses.

Well, sort of. It'll be tough, no matter what. This just gave us about a $1-2m in extra breathing room.

I doubt the Star was technically right to call it a bonus. his contract goes up and 7mm is a reasonable estimate of the increase (the exact amount depends upon the cap numbers which are not known yet) but calling it a bonus makes it sound like a one time payment and I don't think that is how it will work. I believe the increase will be spread over the contract as each year's maximum is now higher.

Correct. The star is reporting it as a bonus because that's all they understand it as. It is not a bonus. He merely has a higher 1st year salary which then gives him a higher raise year over year.

and I wasn't sure about one point and so I checked cbafaq.com. I thought perhaps the max was recalculated every year but it is not. you have it right that the maximum sets the first year salary which is then subject to annual raises which are limited by percentages. there is no restriction against the second year salary going over the second year cap percentage as long as the first year salary was allowed and the percentage increase was allowed.

Im hoping he takes the next step in his development next season and becomes a consistent 45 or better percent shooter. Bird said he told him to work on his post game; so that should be interesting to see how that turns out next season. Im hoping he works on his stamina and his ball handling again. He needs to score 20 or more every night with consistency and create mismatches/double teams to get easier looks for everyone else.
