That is a head scratcher. But, I think I read in Greg Doyle's column this morning that the Pacers told West he would have no role this year. Also isn't West from New Jersey?

How does a conversation like that go down? "Hey West, you're not doing anything at all next year, **** you."

Bird mentioned in his press conference that West was still going to be our starter. More likely he just wasn't as on board with the idea of playing more uptempo, especially at his age, and wanted a new fit. New York is a place where they will still play slow, and he will likely get the ball in the post more often than he did here. Also he will get to play next to Melo, who is still a superstar.

We were going to have to move on in a year or two anyways. Best of luck to him there, unless they're in the way of a playoff spot we want. :)

I do think West grew up in New Jersey. maybe he still has family there. I don't think we'll completely understand his motivation until he holds a post signing press conference - if even then.

I'd be real happy with Milsap, or IF we could get paid well to take Lee. Lee isn't gonna be good for more than 20 min per game, but if we could get Lee and Barnes for Stanko I'd be bouncing off the walls.

You talked about getting Ariza and Capella from Houston for Solo, how about Ariza and Jones for West in an S&T?

There's talk of Houston dumping salary to pursue LMA and that trade concept was geared to help Houston toward that specific objective. At this stage of the game I'm not sure West would be as productive as Ariza. So, given our draft choice I would re-tool the trade to be:

Solo for Ariza and Jones.

I'd do that Solo for Ariza and jones and put Ariza at SG. I think LMA is going to the Spurs so they may strike quickly on that.

Theres a fairly important 'or' in the middle of my statement. Again, not saying he should get either of those things, but surely the Knicks would have to overpay in $ or years to get West.

I hadn't considered the decreased role aspect, which makes a little sense. West has made enough money, and he seems like he would be big on respect/pride etc. Maybe its as simple as finding a place to start and play ~30 mins each night.

I don't think he cares about how many minutes he plays, he wants to win. The guy detests losing. He wouldn't ever go to the Knicks unless they are signing Gasol, and a top point guard as well and maybe not then. NYK are not gonna win many games next season.

Edited thread title to show that it is now official. He has opted out and isn't expected to return to Indy.

Return to Indiana Pacers
