Re: Pacers Interested In Trading Darren Collison Or Cory Joseph
That's great and all, but what happens next season? Or the next 3 to 4 seasons? Take the long term view
Granted no one has a crystal ball that can predict the future, but I am a firm believer of the adage that failing to plan is planning to fail
It is quite obvious that the next 3 or 4 seasons of this franchise will revolve around making a push led by a Victor Oladipo in his prime
It is thus unwise, or even negligent, to not plan around that; in other words, every move that the franchise makes now, at least in terms of being competitive, should be viewed through the lens of "does it give us the best team to play with Vic in the next 3 or 4 years?"
It's obvious that DC isn't going to be part of the picture, or if he is, his role is going to be the Al Jefferson-like role of being a veteran presence
It is also obvious that Thad, Bogie, and CoJo, while very much cherished as part of the team, isn't going to carry the team very far - they are nice to have around and I am OK with re-signing one or two of them, but if the opportunity comes for an upgrade, either via FA or a trade, it'd be shortsighted to not consider it
I am all for keeping Myles, Domas, Doug, Holiday, and even Alize and Sumner around, as they represent the future of the team moving forward, especially Domas who is already a good player, but the team still lacks a piece or two when it comes to giving Vic a team that he can lead a push with

If there is a first round pick coming back, then I say go for it and trade one of them. Gotta look to the future. But I don't think it makes sense to get rid of one for a piece like Ariza, which would just complicate our rotation in the present and not really do much to further any long term goals.

I know they are looking for a PG, but I'm not sure at this point in the season they are looking for an expiring PG. They have nothing to play for so I'm not sure why they would give anything up for a DC or Evans. They have nothing to gain.

Victor, Myles, and Damos form the core. how Holiday, Alize, Leaf, Sumner and draftees to come fit is something we'll see over time. I think CoJo and Doug are keepers one on defense and the other on offense although both could be long term 2nd unit players. I see our future as based on defense and so I'm not worried about adding scorers.

I think it’s pretty obvious that we’re not going to trade either of the PG’s for a lateral move. However, if something made sense both now, and in the future? I think we absolutely would consider that.

I pretty much lost confidence in the story after seeing it was Windhorst basically saying "Well, someone said to someone else..". I just don't put much faith in that.
Now, if Woj were to say anything then all bets would be off.

chicken and the egg (egg came first btw). does the deal that makes sense come first or does the need to make a deal come first? I don't think we need to look for a deal but if one comes knocking we certainly listen.

Re: Pacers Interested In Trading Darren Collison Or Cory Joseph
Only make a trade if it makes the team better, now or in the long run. What does that mean. I guess if we are talking about trading with the Suns I want the Milwaukee pick as part of the deal or I want Josh Jackson. Will they give up Jackson? Probably not. Do they have anyone else they'd give who would help the pacers either now or in the long run? Nope, they are not giving up Bridges and we don't need Bender or Ariza. Now if they would do Ariza and the Bucks 1st for Evans I'd do that, but I can't really see it happening.

For everyone frustrated with DC's play, have you looked at Ariza's? He's been awful this year. Sure part of it is being a role player on a bad team, but he's still shooting 38% on the year.

If the goal is to free up some playing time for Holiday I'd rather keep our guys and just cut into their playing time so Holiday can play 12-15 min per game.

all it takes is a 10 man rotation. don't know why McMillan doesn't like to do that. the key is playing CoJo at the 2. Holiday/Joseph/Evans/Sabonis/McDermott(small),Leaf(big).

Re: Pacers Interested In Trading Darren Collison Or Cory Joseph
Yes, this ^
Nate seems overly concerned about getting every single W possible (not that that's a bad thing)
Current crop of Pacers are at least 10 man deep, with Holiday, CoJo, Doug, Domas, Kyle all deserving backup minutes. And that's not mentioning Leaf, and I am pretending Tyreke doesn't exist
Holiday, Leaf, Domas, and Doug in particular could really use more playing time - in the case of Holiday and Leaf, it'll help with their development, even if the cost is them making rookie mistakes every now and then and costing the team a handful of W's for the season, it is still a good long term strategy to let them play
But Nate seems averse to experimentation, and seems to favour sticking to what has been known to work

Well Wins are the #1 denominator for getting into the playoffs and deciding your rank 1-8. So I can see carrying about every single W.

I don't think that's it. I think it is more subtle than just trying to win. he likes to substitute a few people at a time and like most NBA coaches he feels players like to know a set time when they'll be coming in. by the time he's put 4 reserves in a couple at a time, a starter is ready to come back in and if instead he put a 10th player in he'd be cutting that starters minutes. so he winds up with a 9 man rotation. to get to 10 without cutting a starter's minutes you probably need to do a hockey substitution where all 5 reserves come in and out at the same time. he doesn't want to do that. if I had to guess why I'd say it is because he wants players to be used to playing with more than 4 other teammates. by rotating players in, everyone gets used playing with different combinations and that's important as it makes everyone better ready to deal with foul trouble and injuries..

I don't think there's much in this. Just a rival GM speculating.

Re: Pacers Interested In Trading Darren Collison Or Cory Joseph
For a certain mindset, it makes sense. Two above average guys, both expiring, might as well trade one, right? Even a 2nd round pick is better than nothing.
For better or worse, the Pacers have never gone for asset maximization though. I tend to agree that this is speculation coming from outsiders.

Re: Pacers Interested In Trading Darren Collison Or Cory Joseph
What I cant believe is that there is a thread in the T&T forum suggesting the Pacers trade Cory Joseph for Terrence Ross of Orlando. And the Magic fans are objecting because they think DJ Augustine is just as good as Cory or better according to some of them. I want to say, that's why Indiana will be playing in the Playoffs and the Magic will be in the Lottery again.
They may be in 8th right now but that's only because Washington and Miami can't find their butts with both hands. Come April they'll be in 10th or 11th place.
