Conley Jr was imagining himself playing for the Pacers

Post#1 » by Grang33r » Wed Jul 10, 2019 5:09 am

Awesome read by J.Micheal in the Indy Star today about Mike Conley Jr. Highly recommend reading it. It's funny how things change quickly, for me, i'm happier with Brogdon then having a past-prime Conley Jr, but it struck me interesting that a deal with the Pacers was close enough that he was even seeing himself playing for the Pacers.

"There was the thought," Conley, who was traded after 12 seasons from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Utah Jazz, told IndyStar. "There were a few teams I knew that were going to be in there. Pending the timing of it, I could end up in any one of those cities, including Indianapolis. I already was thinking what it would be like to play at home. Things turned out differently."

Would have been really fun to watch. An Oladipo and Conley backcourt would have been really good on both ends of the court. If the timelines and ages matched up a little better, I think it could have happened.

As it is, trading for a player of his age just has certain disadvantages, and I think the Pacers decided it wasn't the best move for the franchise.

Taking Utah's deal into account, it would've taken at minimum Holiday + Goga/18th Pick + McDermott + Future 1st (similar to one in Brogdon trade) for an older guy on a worse contract. I think the right move was made only having to give up the Future Protected 1st.

Conley is a great player but he just doesn't fit our current timeline. Not with an injured Dipo. He fits Utah's timeline much better so I believe that this is the best result for everyone involved.
