What would you tell Hawks fans are reasons to be enthused about McMillan... and to be wary?

Pardon the imposition, but would love to get some informed opinions from some of those with experience. :D

He's not a bad choice if the Hawks are aiming to make the playoffs this season. McMillan always seems able to extract some minimum level of performance, despite injuries and other disruptions. In his 4 seasons with the Pacers, he made the playoffs every season even with major injuries to key players, but never did get past the first round. He's the classic high floor, low ceiling guy.

If I'd choose just one word to describe him, it would be deliberate. He likes to be in control, focusing heavily on execution. This is great for a young team that doesn't have much structure, but at some point players seem to chafe at the lack of autonomy. He also seems to lack that degree of creativity and unpredictability that you'd need in a playoff series once teams figured out their opponents.

You could certainly do worse though. There's something to be said for consistency. Certainly, the Pacers up and down season has made me miss the consistency of the McMillan years. Grass isn't always greener, etc etc

No worries at all.

I posted longer runs in the trade forum thread of the Pierce firing, but basically, Nate is a top notch interim, but he shouldn’t be your permanent head coach. Shouldn’t even be considered. Guys who are ready to make a leap, will, as Nate will let them just play their game. Everyone else who needs a structured system will wither on the vine a bit, so to speak, as Nate is big on “letting them figure it out”.

But also, you should listen to Portland fans, as everything they told us eventually came true in Indy, too.

More or less this

McDermott was badly utilized and was often just an invisible man

On the other hand, old Nate can be credited with Oladipo and Sabonis breaking through, by basically letting them play how they wanted to

But players like Turner, Brogdon, McDermott, etc all suffered under his "figure it out" system

To add to this, Nate will also be hands off in the lockerroom. Given the early issues with the Hawks this season, this is the part I'd be worried most about. We were lucky to have Big Al and Thad helping in the lockerroom. I'm not sure Atlanta has anyone with that kind of voice.

That is a really good point for them to consider beyond the X's and O's.
