I think it's more of a supply and demand thing
There's an abundance of serviceable backup guards for teams who are looking for them. And almost every team has one or two of these type of potential diamond in the rough type of young players
Warriors have Damion Lee and Jordan Poole, Lakers have Talen Horton-Tucker, Celtics have Carson Edwards, 76ers have Shake Milton, Hornets have Devonte Graham, etc
For us, we have Sumner and Stanley, and to an extent Aaron Holiday
In most cases teams like their own guy better anyway, so it's not really so much about how good talent Sumner or Stanley are. There's just no need go out of the way to poach the 8th or 9th guy from another team, when they can just re-sign their own. Unless we're taking about someone who had a breakout season. Although we saw that Sumner had a nice season, it's not like he took a step towards stardom, so I don't think teams are making plans to acquire him
But yea, the point is it's very possible to sign a serviceable 8th or 9th man cheaply, especially if the team pays more attention to the G league
And besides, Malcolm Brogdon is our biggest contract. We don't have any other big contracts to worry about, so I think we can afford to do the "combine his $20m contract and someone's else's $10/20m contract for a $30/40m player" thing
