Re: Head Coach Candidates
I’m sure this is just Pacers doing due diligence of interviewing available coaches. Sounds like they’re going to be interviewing quite a few candidates and not in a hurry to get their man.
That could be construed as good news and thorough or that they don’t see anyone who they gotta have !

Too many openings to dilly dally. Someone else could hire our first choice.Pacers Forever wrote:I’m sure this is just Pacers doing due diligence of interviewing available coaches. Exactly how I would approach it. So makes me wonder if they even have a target hire or have to check personalities to see mindsets of candidates. Their job performance is already out there.

The combine is this week in Chicago so everyone will be in one place. Interviews and reference checking is going on.

Out of those 3 the only one that makes sense is Stotts.

It didn't work out well last year. And we just shouldn't be even considering guys like Clifford. It's a waste of time at best.Pacers Forever wrote:I’m sure this is just Pacers doing due diligence of interviewing available coaches. I know others may disagree, but the only reason I can see for the last hire is he must have been cheaper than other candidates.

Clifford's offense in Orlando made the Pacers offense under McMillan look free flowing and high powered.

I don't think you're wrong that that's at least a huge role in that hire. Nate was paid significantly less than most other new hires around the league last year. I think he got around $2m, while most new hires were paid over $3m, most close to $4m.
I think they also lusted after the Nick Nurse style and had blinders on when interviewing that staff. Why not Adrian Griffin instead? Lastly, there was just too much Iowa connection there with Buchanan and Bjorkgren to ignore that it might have been a bit of a pet hire.

You are likely right. Buchanan needs to find some better chums.

This is my problem. He's really the worst kind of re-tread. A coach who has not had much success and has had some consistent failures. He has some strengths, but I hate that we're even looking into him almost exclusively because he has experience, with little regard for how that experience actually went.

Is there any chance they are interviewing him with an assistant coach job in mind?

Highly doubtful. Maybe if we were going after another first year head coach.

Or to get recommendations on his former assistants.

I don't think he's getting another head coaching gig anytime soon, so it could be.

Re: Head Coach Candidates
@c2Cooper has an article up discussing Clifford's defense. very positive. I still want the head coach to be a former player which of the announced interviews would be Shaw. but I want two coordinators. if Clifford would take the defensive coordinator job, fine. but I'd be equally happy signing whoever was his defensive assistant in Orlando. would that be ty Corbin?
she also has an older piece on Stotts, and I'd like him or one of his guys as offensive coordinator.
