Interesting. I guess he could theoretically help in the “locker room vet” category that Pritchard has described. And he may be a better C/PF than Goga at this moment, but man. I’d hate pushing Goga/Oshae/Isaiah further down the line for a full season.

Seems like the idea is to give the final spot to a vet who can still play a bit, but should come cheap and won't need a guaranteed rotation spot. Which indicates even more what we already knew, that Doug is priced out for us.

Batum will only be turning 33 in December, and he just played a major role as a starter/6th man for a playoff team. Would he be ready to jump to the 15th type roster spot with a much more intermittent role already?

Or could it be talks just in case? In case we move one of the centers?

I didn't necessarily mean as a 15th man. So not like a Jakarr. But more of a situational guy who will be more than fine taking nights off. Even if we could afford Doug, we can't give him a raise and then play him half the time. We can with someone like Batum or Lou.

Rick doesn't have a great track record of developing young players, but unlike our last few coaches, he usually finds them minutes throughout the season. I expect that some vets will sit certain nights and some youngsters will sit certain nights depending on matchups.

Not that Batum or Lou specifically are looking for that type of role, but they may be?

I’ll say, Justise Winslow has always intrigued me as like the poorest man’s version of a poor man’s version of Ben Simmons. Can’t shoot, but can defend/switch most of the league 1-4 and handle and distribute the ball decently well?

Basically, don’t expect a major shakeup.
The Knicks are most aggressive in chasing Turner, but not likely he’s dealt.
Pacers would like to get off Lamb’s deal as he’s not necessary with Levert here.
Brogdon deal is unlikely, though we have talked him a bit.
McConnell looking for long-term security.
McDermott likely too expensive.
Some free agent names of Avery Bradley, Lou Williams (as a cheap quick offense option off the bench), Will Barton, and Garrett Temple.

I think there is a spot for a guard who is a defensive specialist. I'm thinking late quarter offense/defense.

Edit. Is this our best defensive lineup: Sumner, Duarte, Warren, Jackson, and Turner?

It might be but, I’ll bet you don’t see it this year.

Justin probably needs to be in there somewhere

In looking at the top FA and RFA list(over 200 players) on HoopsHype I came up with my list of players I would like if the Pacers signed them. Now there’s a lot of players I like who for one reason or another aren’t realistic gets so they’re not considered in making this list.

My list criteria used was in no certain order
realistically obtainable
player would agree to our small market
decent offensive game
would strengthen current roster
defensively talented
roster addition with minimal changes
Shooting percentages
keep core group together if possible

PG options
T J McConnell - priority
Derrick Rose - vet with multiple pluses
Reggie Jackson - might be pricey

SG options
Alex Caruso - feisty
Alec Burks - defense and offense
Malik Monk - getting better
Danny Green- shooter and defender
Avery Bradley - vet defense less expensive

PF options
Jeff Green- vet less expensive

SF options
Nicolas Batum - vet defender and more
Josh Hart - hustles
Reggie Bullock - had a good year

Center- nah got more than enough

In summary none of the options are in any order and just players I think Pacers could target depending on how much of the roster they plan to change which might only be as few as 2 changes.

Or Oshae. But Warren isn’t a slouch there, I’ll admit.

From John Hollinger today:

Sources say T.J. McConnell is likely staying in Indiana for, at or slightly above, the non-taxpayer MLE. But a more interesting question is if the Pacers can keep Doug McDermott too. Sources say they are trying, but he may have offers for the MLE or above. While the Pacers have Bird rights to pay him, they would need to move a contract (such as Jeremy Lamb’s expiring $10 million deal), to pay McDermott and stay below the tax line.
Indiana will also be in the market for a third point guard on a minimum deal. Lou Williams could have some traction here.

Upon reflection, if TJ gets the non-taxpayer MLE or above, I have a hard time seeing how Indy can make that work. We have early bird rights, so we can only offer up to 105% of the league average salary from this year, which likely would only allow for a first year right at $10m, or nearly the same as the MLE.

Either way, that would take up most all of our space and leave us just a vet minimum short of the tax line.

Yeah I'm not feeling a full mle number for TJ. Would hate to let him go but that's a tough number to work with for any backup, especially one with glaring limitations.

TJ was a great backup PG at $3.5m

At $9.5m, it becomes quite a different story

I would offer him something around $3-4m range. Being paid in the $3-4m range makes it easier to ignore his shortcomings. More than that, you start noticing his flaws a bit more

This is a really difficult one. I love watching him play. If he could just get a more dependable jump shot he would be much more valuable.

The other side of the coin is who do you replace him with that brings the defense and ball distribution he does? He is the best passer on the team.

Of course he is not injured nearly enough to truly fit this team.

Oh, I’d be more than comfortable paying McConnell on the same contract that Justin got.
