I was wondering if an NBA contract can be renegotiated? Lets say Hedo Turkoglu, he's set to make $9,800,000, $10,600,000, $11,400,000, $12,000,000 over the next 4 yrs with the last year as a ETO his option. Turk says he wants to be traded lets say we wanted him can his deal be reworked to make it not quite so horrible lets say flatten it out at $9 per with the final yr a team option, if he would accept that will the CBA allow it?

I'm not suggestiong we trade to get him but more interested in the possibility of a reworked contract and what would be it's effect on the cap structure?

NBA player contracts are guaranteed dollar for dollar to the penny unless the player is bought out, i.e. Tinsley.

Would I love to see them do an NFL type thing that gives players more money and years if they agree to reduce the final year of said contract? Yes! But as it stands the current CBA benefits players looking to make a killing on their skills.

Along the same lines, I wouldn't be against trading for Turkoglu, the guy is one of this era's best 3 pt. shooters and can play multiple positions on the floor.

As far as I know they are not negotiable unless certain "guaranteed amounts" have been decided upon.

Take James Jones from the Miami Heat for example:

His next three years on contract are:

$4,650,000 , $4,970,000, $5,290,000

However, if waived the guaranteed amounts are:

$1,856,000, $1,984,000, $2,112,000

As far as I am aware, such things need to be negotiated before the contract is signed. Otherwise, unless a buyout is agreed upon (which still counts against the cap) the $$$ owed will stand (Unless void of contract ie legal issue etc is present).

What I was wondering is if a guy like Turk wants to get traded which he has said he wants out of Toronto, can his deal be reworked under the CBA if he agrees or is the deal set in stone even if he whats to renego it.

Longer story short, in all reality, no.

A few years ago the Raptors tried to get Mourning to void his deal since he refused to report to Toronto (cough a-hole cough), and they weren't interested in paying him 8 figures to not play for them. If both sides had agreed and the player's union had blessed the act, the contract could have been voided.
That is the only time I've ever heard of anything like that even being discussed, however. Mourning of course shot it down and demanded something like 12 million to not show up (cough a-hole cough).

Oh, and this so angered the commissioner that he instituted the rule stating that the if the team feels like they cannot fine a player for not reporting after a trade the league will do so. Of course Toronto didn't want to fine Mourning his salary for every day he didn't show up because it would have put a black mark on the organization in the minds of other players.
