Troy Murphy Becomes Bargaining Chip

Whom the Indiana Pacers draft or potentially acquire in a trade in the coming week will be a significant factor in whether they keep forward Troy Murphy.

The Pacers want to trade some of their contracts that expire after next season. Murphy, who averaged a double-double in points and rebounds for the second consecutive season, is the most attractive option. The catch is the Pacers don’t want to receive a contract that will hamper their rebuilding process.

That could be the case if they want to acquire New Orleans point guard Darren Collison. The Hornets also are looking to unload some of their high-priced contracts.

Trading Murphy without getting a power forward in return could put the Pacers in a tough spot. Tyler Hansbrough played only 29 games last season because of an inner ear infection/concussion. Veteran Jeff Foster appeared in 16 games and is recovering from back surgery.

The Pacers could trade Murphy and draft a power forward with the No. 10 pick June 24. There is a good chance, though, that the Pacers will trade their pick to address their point guard concerns.

The Pacers have had conversations with more than 20 teams about possible trades.

Love all these rumors coming out of Indy. I think Murphy will be dealt at some point this summer, and I'm hoping we get a player that can come in right away an contribute...like a Darren Collison. I would be more than willing to trade Murphy, and then draft a young big man, or mayb acquire another decent player and another pick for him? Who do you see the Pacers getting for Murphy?

Thoughts?

Well I hope a trade just actually happens.

This. I just want this era of the Pacers to be over with, we are almost done.

I think he will have more value at the trade deadline than this summer. Maybe not, but if it is better to wait we should considering we've waited this long.

This. If his value isn't as high at the deadline though, which isn't likely anyway, we will still have his contract coming off the books. We need to practice some patience when handling Murphy, IMO.

20 teams! Wow! That means only 9 teams aren't interest in Murphy!

Not exactly.

We should draft the best player available. Murphy will not start for the Pacers after next year anyways.

Pacers should have a good year this year because 2 or 3 starters are in their contract year. everybody plays their best during their contract year.

If the Pacers are indeed going to draft Orton or Davis, they would have no use in a JJ Hickson anymore, and if i recall, that was the major road block in the Cavs/Pacers potential deal. Twenty teams seems like a lot but i bet many of them are just offering their junk to match the salaries, where as the Pacers will demand a first round pick and/or a somewhat decent young player.

I hope that we get something a lot better than Collison if we start trading off our expiring contracts.

During contract years, players look out for themselves more than any other time, and try and get "theirs". There is still a lack of overall talent on this team and taking the BPA is something Indy should do, rather than reach for a guy or take on a long-term prospect.
