Pacers are offering 1 yr contracts to free agents so they can have as much salary cap space as possible next summer, according to sources

I hope this in reference to Farmar. 1 year is ok with me, any more and no.

I disagree. Players who haven't really established themselves (Farmar, Foye etc...) would probably like to sign a 1 year deal here because they have a chance to get significant playing time. Thus, enhancing their value.

in any other year, yes. but with the CBA running out and a lockout possible, players are concerned about having no guaranteed pay next fall.

When was the last lock-out, don't worry it's not going to happen.

Regardless, Farmar or Foye aren't leaving money on the table because nobody that is serious about winning now view them as an option. The truth is that both of them are entering their prime and probably don't want to be tied down by a lengthy/ low salaried contract. Both of them failed when they were younger, and haven't been given the chance to run a team again. Maybe if they got another chance.

I think any pg in this perdicament, including Livingston, should view the Pacers situation as a prime spot to land. Actually the one-year rental could be worth millions if all goes well.

So we will "rent" a pg? I'm totally ok with this and it makes sense, but it sure means another sucky year.

The last lockout was the 98-99 season. It can happen and I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Back in 98-99 rookies were coming in and demanding $100 mill, 7 yr contracts, and for an all-star reserve that was the norm (JuwanHoward, Rose, AHouston). That lockout was good for the league, and much needed.

With the rookie scale, salary-cap, and shorter contracts of today, the NBA is a lot less likely to go on strike, imo. They owners and players will figure it out before it comes to that.

Owners addin Rookie scales and now tryna reduce contracts by 20%. soon players are goin to have to pay to play in the NBA.

Well here's the other side of it all too. Say they sign Jordan Farmer to a one year deal and he impresses, and he impresses to the point that they could sign him again for another year.

The Pacers can extend him a one year offer in 2011 at 4.2 million dollars (120% of 3.5 milion).

Players who find themselves unable to make the kind of money they want could also take on the Pacers one year deals knowing they have the cap space in 2011 to get something more substancial.

You gotta think Mo Taylor, the former King and Rocket PF. He took half the MLE from the Rockets knowing, they had the substanical cap space a year later to give him a much more lucrative deal. Grant it, three years after said deal, his playing career kinda fell apart and he hasn't played much pro ball since. But players I think have learned since that time as well.

There is a chance you might get a Jordan Farmar for a one year rental considering LA just signed Blake. Outside of Farmar and maybe bringing back Earl Watson, it appears TJ Ford might the starting PG again which is a scary sight for you guys. If all else fails, I guess Larry can look to the NBDL for a cheap PG.

If O'brien doesn't start Stephenson at point in the first game of the season, Bird should fire him. BR is an amazin ballhandler and passer, and can score if he is told to. Actually can be unstoppable at times. Larry probably is gonna shut up those rumors that he is terrible at evaluatin talent. I never really supported any of his draft moves but after this year I think he could have gotten the steal of the draft in Lance.

Really? The guy that is regarded as a PURE SG, is the one you want starting in the 1st game at PG or you'd fire the coach?

Let's see first if the guy can make the team. He simply has tried to overpower opposing players through high school and college, and he's not going to be able to do that anymore in the NBA.

Stephenson (or Born Ready as you'd like to call him) is a shooter. He's shown nothing but being a selfish shooter, who tried to drive to the basket every time he had the ball. He's a scorer, not a distributor in any way. He might have been an amazing ball handler in high school, and might have been above average in college, but he's at or below average in the NBA. He's not a PG. He's a SG. Plain and simple. He might be able to burn a few minutes at PG (much like the Pacers have tried to do with Dunleavy over the past 3 years), but he's not going to be burning up the starters minutes at PG.

That's what Drew Gooden did last season and he just signed a $30 million deal with the Bucks. 8-)

Sounds like someone has a bromance going with Stephenson! Could be over hyping!

I hope the Kid is a monster but starting the first game at PG if we are looking at that it's gonna be a long season.

It would be great if he can just be a contributor and give us 6pts, 4 rbs.

more like 18pts 5rebs 7assts, back to the real world I'd say he could easily get more playin time then Rush if he is commited to being a team player. I think he could put up 9/3/3, pretty decent numbers for the 40th pick.

I think the Pacers should commit to trying to find two point guards.

At least one on at least a two year deal, in a possible trade with TJ Ford, and another a temp solution on a one year deal.

My premise is this, currently the team has no real young future star at PG and the 2011 draft class has more depth and quality then the 2009 draft class and could any PG class in the last decade.

By having one guy signed for 2-3 years, you have a veteran player in place when the future arrives in 2011 and even as a reserve, his salary and skill to be modest starter/mentor wouldn't hinder the Pacers salary structure in 2011 to the point they can't add a major talent or two in contracts.

Then bring on a one year solution that can be the veteran players off the bench and could be moved again in February should AJ Price recover and be able to advance his game further.

For a kid that's never had to be a team player, and has always been the entire team, that might be as easy as saying "Ron Artest could've led the Pacers to a championship if he could've just been not insane...."
