Who can we get at PG?

Ok so it seems like we are going to get a starting PG. But who?
Who is left in the free agency? Or who could we get via a trade realisticely?

Some names that i've heard tossed around in discussions are:
Farmar, Lowry, Flynn, Andre Miller, Billups, Tony Parker and Lou Williams.
They're the ones i can think of off the top of my head, but what do you guys reckon will happen?
Who would you like us to go after that is realistic and a chance of happening?

I'll say it again...Luke Ridnour...he gives the Pacers the best chance to win running the point....in my opinion of course. If not him, then sign Shaun Livingston to a minimum contract. Also, if OKC lets Mustafa Shakur go, then we should give him a serious look.

Yeah I like livingston. He still wants a chance to prove himself and would jump at a chance at minutes in Indy. He'd be cheap, because only a fool idiot would sign him and his bionic knee to any kind of large contract. And he's unlikely to be retained in washington, what with wall/arenas/hinrich all there.

Ridnour could work. so could Hinrich if the trade could be turned into a three way. Flip Murray could also work. I've cooled on Livingston now that it is looking like we only need a mentor for b2br

I think the Hinrich trade has already been finalized...I can't remember where, but I thought read that the deal was official now.

Yeah i think the Hinrich trade is official now but i'm not that sure.
Maybe Ridnour, personally i'm not a fan. I would prefer Livingston out of those two.

Oh the other guy i forgot about was Mike Conley, he was mentioned fairly often at the start of the offseason.

Just sign me Shaun Livingston for a 1 year dirt cheap deal, move Ford for any deal we can (think Dan Gadzuric value), and let's just go to camp.

Livingston is a pretty good acquisition for the Pacers, but I'm worried about his injuries and his size, he's like 6'7, that's a bit awkward in my opinion.

Of the two, I like Ridnour better. But for a cheap deal I would take a chance on Livingston. Before his injury he showed some promise.

Well it looks like Farmar is going to New Jersey, if the Wiretap story is correct. Damn...Farmar sounded like one of the most promising options to me.

I guess the chance to be a starter wasn't really what Farmar was looking for...Rod Thorn makes no bones about wanting Farmar to back up Devin Harris. If the chance to start isn't a motivator, then the Pacers don't have much to offer, because they sure as hell don't have any money to offer.

After Wild Gil got suspended and Foye got hurt, Shaun was handed the rock by default. Over the last quarter of the season he put up the best stats of his career, post-injury. He put up good stats (17/6/4) on a horrible team that rebuilt/tanked midseason. Considering he played the most difficult position that well, under those conditions, convinces me he is ready to restart his career.

I look at it like this, we haven't been stable at pg since Jackson retired. Tins was okay but his career was bi-polar. We haven't really addressed the position appropriately, with only one attempt in the last decade. No other pg we've had since Jax has had a better stretch than Shaun's stint with Wash.

I'd certainly sign him to a cheap deal as opposed to overpaying for a b/u.

*Bulls fan here*

Pacers should really try to trade for Ramon Sessions. With the Timberwolves recently signing Luke Ridnour (and already having Flynn and eventually Rubio), you guys could get Ramon Sessions easily.

According to the T'Wolves forum: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1034187
“They’re basically looking for a salary dump" for Sessions. He has nearly 3yr/12.7 mil left on his deal. You could probably trade pure cap-space for him (unsure of your exact cap-room), it would cost nearly 4mil.

Here's just some info on Sessions:
6'3 190 - 24 years old
Career Averages: 10.0 PPG - 4.7 APG - 3.0 RPG - 0.9 SPG - 1.83 TO - 0.449 FG% - 0.179 3P% - 24.5 MPG (he's only shot 56 3's in his 3 year career!)

There goes another point guard, Farmer to the Nets. And ridnour as well? Didn't realise he went to the T-Wolves. Who the hell are we going to get? lol

I like the idea of Ramon Sessions personally. T-Wolves have a lot of point guards, Sessions was really good for the Bucks and then he got traded and didn't get many minutes for Minnesota.
Sounds like a good option to me.

There's no finality on the Ridnour to Minnesota yet but it's probably gonna get done nonetheless.
I'd like to have Sessions than Farmar so i'm not really disappointed that Farmar went to the Nets, what worries me is WHEN are we going to make a move? I mean, we could be weighing the offers, studying the proposals, etc. but it could be too late by the time we decide to pull the trigger.
Maybe we could offer an expiring like either TJ Ford or Dunleavy plus a future 2nd rounder?

Yeah i wasn't dissapointed either really, about Farmar.
You make some good points, i really don't know when we're going to do something about the point guard situation. Hopefully we don't leave it too late. I mean plenty of teams are making moves now and i've been looking forward to seeing what we do with our roster.
Whether we pick-up someone from the free agency, or make some trades. And if we do make some trades who will go? Ford, Dunleavy, Murphy? I have no idea. Looking forward to seeing what happens.

Yup, looks like we're gonna be trading for our point guard.

Truth be told, Dunleavy for Calderon is not so bad. The guy is overpaid, but he's not the crap bag that people describe, and he's better than some starting PGs out there. He's a sharp sharp sharp shooter and i think he'd fit well here.

http://www.wearingfilm.com/picketfence/2009/09/in-defense-of-jose-calderon/ describes a bit of why he's not as bad as people think.

There's a lot of good young PGs out there, but soon, they'll be overpaid too.

I say we pull the trigger, give toronto a much-needed expiring, and get a guy who is capable of averaging 8/9 assists in a season (last year he had some injury issues and the team changed and TURKOGLU). He shoots 40% from three, usually shoots over 90% FT (what happened last season??) and has a 50 FG% on his CAREER.

The guy is not flashy at all. He runs a half-court offense well. He can, though usually doesn't, lead a break. He runs the offense. We need that.

A couple of factors go into why Calderon doesn't work for us.

1, his defense makes Steve Nash look like a DPOY.

2, his contract IS a big deal. It would kill our 2011 cap space plans.

3, he is a stat padder. He's an average PG owed 30 mil over the next three year.

Uhhhhh it wouldn't actually "kill" our cap space plan. It would be part of the plan.

calderon, granger, hibbert, rush, price, george, stephenson, mcbobs, rolle, all together would be like, what, 37 million? leaves plenty of cap space.

We're not signing some max player like carmelo, so using a bit of the capspace on calderon is not so insane.

His defense is not as bad as people think - he's not good, but the raptor's defensive problems were not caused by him - merely compounded. With Hibbert, Rush, Rolle around, we should be able to cover those up a lot better.

If we are going to trade for a point guard on something other than a rookie contract I'd go with Hinrich long before Calderon. You give up some outside shooting and maybe some creativity but he's a far better defender and his contact is one year shorter.

I'm pretty sure McRoberts is one of the expirings: Ford, Murphy, Dunleavy, Foster, S Jones, McRoberts

It seems that once the Heat have their PG situation worked out, the Lakers will get the next pick of the litter and then maybe a backup in Chicago, then us.
