Question about Posey from a Celtics Fan..

First of all i just want to say congratulations on getting Collison. You guys got him at a very reasonable price and i think hes going to be an elite PG in the very near future. He did an EXCELLENT job in NO when CP3 was down with an injury. Which brings me to my question about Posey. Clearly he was just a throw in to make the contracts add up so you guys could get Collison. It seems you guys dont have many minutes for a guy like Posey with Granger, Dunleavy, and Rush all in your rotation. I was wondering if you guys have heard anything about a possible buy out for Posey? As a C's fan we could really use him over here to come back and supply rest to Pierce, add defense off the bench, and more three point shooting. Do you guys envision a buy out as a possibility or do you guys plan on using Posey as a veteran mentor type player? Do you see him actually getting into the rotation and being a role player? Have you heard anything in local news on what his role may be with your team? Any information you guys could supply would be greatly appreciated.

I can't imagine a buyout happening until next season at the earliest. It would be wise to take an extra season's cap hit for no reason. We'd have to get a pretty low buyout cost for it to happen.

The only way I see him leaving this off season would be via trade.

Bird seemed pretty happy that he was going to be a Pacer. I don't envision a buy-out unless Posey is adamant about playing for a contender and gives the Pacers a very favorable buy-out settlement. As for his minutes, I don't envision Posey playing a huge role, but I imagine he would see some time nearly every game.

When the trade was announced and we learned we were getting Posey along with Collison, i was extremly happy. He's a guy that shoots 3's like you mentioned, which is perfect in the Jim O'Brien system but he also plays a lot of defense, which, we rarely do, so again, a great fit for us. However, post trade, i heard Chris Mannix of SI.com say he believes Posey won't be a Pacer. He said both Miami and Boston will want him and said he thinks Indy will buy him out.

So if you guys had to guess, you would say hes probably staying put, unless he leaves through a trade? This kind of makes me a little up set that Ainge waived Sheed already. Do you guys think Bird would have traded Posey for Sheeds expiring for more cap relief?

Thing was, Sheed's deal wasn't expiring he had a player option for the second year. It was apparently a nice gesture for him to retire and save them some money. I doubt he'd have any interest in joining Indy with the history between he and the Pacers either.

Anyway, my assumption is that the Celtics would rather save the money at this point.

According to Shamsports, Posey is under contract for two more years at a total salary of just over $13 million...that's an awful lot of contract to eat with a buyout. I doubt it happens.

Instead, I think it's only a matter of time before T.J. Ford accepts a buyout. It's in his best interests as well as the Pacers'.

So there is the possibility of a buy out then? Man that would be huge for the Celtics. I cant see him going to Miami with Wade, James, Miller, and Jones solidifying their wingman position. Posey has won a title with Rondo, Ray, Paul, KG, Perk, Baby, and Shaq. Plus he already knows the system and plays we run in Boston. I would think/hope he'd rather go to the veteran team where he would get more minutes then to go to the young team in Miami where it seems minutes would be limited. Again if you hear any news of a possible buy please let me know in this thread or come on over to the Boston board and share the info. Thanks.

Sheed was willing to be traded to any team and except a very cheap buy out to help the Celtics out. No matter what happend he was going to retire. I feel like a Sheed for Posey deal would have helped both ball clubs out tremendously. Sheed would have accepted a much smaller buy out then Posey would. It would have gotten you out of the rest of the 13 mil owed to him and it would have supplied us with our back up wing.

I'd imagine a lot of teams would have jumped on that if it were available. There's a big difference in reading that Rasheed was willing to help the Celtics out and it actually being accomplished via a trade. Something tells me if the Hornets could have gotten Rasheed's "expiring" with a cheap buyout for Posey they would have taken it in a second.

we don't expect a buyout but we're in the market for a veteran 4 now. we'd certainly swing Posey for one and D Jones is probably also available.

Dahntay Jones and Solomon Jones for Glen Davis and Semih Erden.
We cut Erden, he resigns with Celtics. Dahntay would be like Tony Allen and With Shaq and JO it would seem Baby is expendable. Then again you lost Scalabrine, that blow could take you out of contenion.

I agree they would have taken that deal in a second, but the Celtics and Ainge specifically wouldn't have. We wouldn't wanna trade Sheed to NO for Posey because wed be gettin a 33 year old role player with 2 years at 13 mill left. We were looking at guys like Rudy Fernandez and Josh Howard for Sheed. Unfortunately those deals fell apart causing Ainge to give up on a deal for Sheed and he waived him. If we hung on to Sheed a little while longer, Ainge would see the backup wing free agents are all gone and might have pursued Posey from you guys as a last resort for Sheed since the free agent pool dried up. Thats why im interested to find out if Posey will be bought out because now we can get him for a vet min deal as a 1 year rental.

Posey would likely not get bought out until next off-season, at the earliest.

However, it's more likely that the Pacers were ok with getting him as a veteran, and plan to hold onto him, or move him a deal. It's one thing to be stuck with a contract you'd rather not have, but at least get to play the guy. It's another to buy them our for 2 years and get absolutely nothing out of it, including a discount either.

Long story short, don't plan on a buyout. More than likely we'll flip him at some point this season for a veteran on a similar 2 year contract at PF.
