Well I guess most of the actual talking is done by his agent :dontknow:
Not much for you to do once you give him 'no buyout' instructions heh.

refused a buyout of $5 million.... Im not surprised, but still I would love if we could get him off the roster somehow.

i know him personally and TJ is the most frugal player in the NBA.. he'll scoff at buying a $50 room a night after it was mark down so some of his NBA stars friends can come to celebrate his Weekend Party with him.. It's they should pay them selves or he should get it for free... why take 5 million when you can rot on the bench for 8.5?? dilly dumb.. he would latch on for the vet min 1.3 if he do that... he'll give Larry Bird 2 million? he wont give his own family 25k? why would he give the pacers 3.5? GET OUT OF HERE! lol

Offering him only $5 million is just dumb; of course Ford is not going to agree to that.

The Pacers should cut to the chase. I'm not sure what the league minimum salary is for someone with Ford's amount of NBA service, but if it's $1.3 million, offer Ford a little bit over $7.2 million ($8.5 million [his salary] - $1.3 million = $7.2 million). Ford comes out ahead financially once another team signs him, plus he gets to go to a team that actually wants him. And the Pacers save a little money and clear a roster spot for Magnum Rolle. Everybody wins.

"If' he's bought out, I am correct in thinking the only thing this changes is the number of players on the roster? The cap numbers aren't affected (unless the buyout is different to his contract value?) and then he still 'counts' this season anyway right?

that's the only way.. TJ all about money.. i was around the day he got traded to the pacers and he was already wanting the pacers to sign him to an extension.. he's taking the most not the lessor... He was courted by Miami in the 03' draft but they took wade.. maybe he can latch on in Miami.. but TJ aint giving up 3.5 million.. he aint going to make that next year so why he going to give it up this year? Like you said shave the 1.3 million all you getting.. and he'll latch on with another team for the vet min.. done deal..

I think the Pacers' cap number would be reduced by whatever amount of salary Ford ends up getting paid by his new team. And his new team would have to pay him at least the veteran's minimum.

Ahh ok thanks, so our savings this season are likely to be minimal unless he gets a bigger than expected deal with someone. Although I guess the savings would more than cover Magnums contract.

We all know it's obvious that he's not practicing his b-ball skills during the summer...

Good points above about offering him essentially his salary minus the vet minimum.

How long can we wait to buy him out?

Someone should get it into his head that if he's not careful he'll go the Tinsley way - rot on the bench, eventually get bought out, sign one vet min contract and never get much of a deal again.

If he can sign a vet min contract immediately this season, he can probably play well for a team who needs him, and get a better contract next season.

If we let him rot on the bench, he won't get a good contract next season. He should figure that out and be happy. If he takes a 5 million buyout and gets to play meaningfully somewhere, he'll more than make up the difference by getting a better contract next season.

Tinsley tried to play chicken with Bird. He got his full buyout in the end, but you'll never see him on an NBA roster again.

The big difference between Ford and Tinsley is that Tinsley had some off the court issues as well. It seems Ford just wants all his money, which you cannot fault him for. He knows he is not going to make any significant money anymore, as he is nothing but a backup who should play 15 mins per game (max). I have heard stories of Ford's frugality, and I am not surprised he refused a buyout. He knows his days are number and he has all the leverage, if the Pacers want him gone they are going to have to give him at least 7 million.

I know Ford has butted heads with O'Brien, but he doesn't appear to be a bad teamate. Tinsley needed to get out just because he was a cancer to the team, I don't necessarily feel the same way about Ford. Plus, if you buy him out, you lose his expiring contract, which could become pretty valuable come the trade deadline. If the team wants to waive someone, why not just waive Solomon Jones? He's essentially Maghum Rolle with no upside.

Yeah, cutting Solo is the other option available to make room for Rolle--if the Pacers can't pull off the BEST option, which is to make another good trade that frees up a spot.

Maybe cutting him is a better option than buying out Ford. Or, maybe not. A buyout saves the Pacers some money and gets rid of an unhappy (if well-behaved) player. Plus, I'm skeptical of Ford's value to the Pacers as an expiring contract. Dunleavy figures to be much better for that purpose. Not sure the Pacers really need two sizable expirings, unless maybe they think someone desirable enough to be worth a $20 million contract is going to become available in a straight salary dump. I'd guess the likelihood of a good match for the Pacers along those lines is not very great.

Well it seems like he won't be getting bought out, because someone was stupid enough to think that he would accept 5 million when he's scheduled to make 8.5. Had they offered 7.5 he may have taken it, but 5? Really? Did they actually think this man would have a problem with sitting on his arse and collecting all of his money if they didn't make an acceptable offer? Offering a man a 5 million dollar buyout when he's scheduled to make 8.5 is pretty much like saying we want to pay you every cent we owe, but decided to insult you on your way out. The only way to be rid of him now is to cut him.

5 million seems stupid to me too, but I think it's just the opening gambit. I think the buyout talks are far from over, and, barring a trade or something that intervenes, I think eventually a buyout will get done. It just makes too much sense for both sides.
