Josh Smith?

According to the wiretap, Atlanta may be shopping Josh Smith due to the recent extension of Al Horford. Anybody think Indy should go after him/would you want him? Other power forwards are by no means a guarantee (especially thinking Jeff Green here) and Josh Smith is a freak athlete and a great defender. Granted, he plays small forward now in Atlanta but has shown that he can play the 4. But nonetheless, an awesome rebounder and shot blocker.

We'd obviously have to give up a lot to get him, but have a good amount of expiring contracts to offer up. Granted, I'm biased but here's what I'm thinking: offer Mike Dunleavy, a future (non-2011) first-round pick (since I think a higher pick next year will be beneficial for Indy), a second-round pick, maybe the overseas rights to either Stanko or Lorbek, and then to make the numbers work, either Solo or (don't pounce on me) Psycho T. In either PF scenario, we might have to take back one of their smaller-scale contracts such as Etan Thomas, Jason Collins, or Pape Sy - just to make the numbers work. I can't send it through the trade checker because Collins or Thomas can't be traded until December. But I thought I'd put it here first before I put it on a bigger thread.

They wouldn't want to give up Smoove for a hodgepodge. They would love to keep Horford AND Smith.

I love Josh's game but I wouldn't give up much of anything for him. I just don't see big name, high priced, players as the need. we've got our nucleus of good young players, what we need are the veteran role players. remember how Bryon Scott came him behind Reggie and showed what it took to be a champion?

As long as we keep Danny, DC, PG, Lance, Tyler, and Roy, go get him.

If I'm Atlanta it would take a starting caliber center and/or point guard. Or young guys who project to playing those roles. Maybe Hansbrough, Collison and Dunleavy or Hibbert and Dunleavy. I wouldn't make either of those treades but I expect that's where the conversation would have to start for Atlanta. Smith (a near all-star level player on a contract that matches his production) would not come cheap.

I would love to see Josh Smith here in Indy, but in all reality I dont see it happening. We really have nothing that we can give up to get him. Our only hope is Atlanta becomes desperate takes expirings for him, but it is unlikely.

Agreed.

I'd give up Hansbrough with expirings in a trade for Josh. Think about it, if we trade for Josh, wouldn't Tyler max out at about 12-18 minutes a night, total?

I'd make a Ford/Hansbrough/protected future 1st for Smith/Collins, Powell, or Thomas as filler (Atlanta's choice). Or, Dunleavy/Hansbrough/protected future 1st for Smith/Mo Evans.

I think Smith could be a nice option in between Hibbert and Granger long-term.

As noted already, as long as the Pacers don't mortgage the future with the core 4, i'd be ok with making any type of trade to get him. Smith has proven to be able to score and plays very good defense.

I think our only legit chance of filling the PF spot with the "cap space" is by trading an expiring, a youth and the 1st round pick. Kinda, the way Boston build their team. They had a bunch of expiring, so a lot of cap space coming up, and instead of hitting the market, they made trades. While, we don't need trades, i do think our only chance to get that perfect fit will need to come via a trade.

Otherwise, we won't get a legitimate PF and we'll have to over pay, since the market for PF is very dry next summer.

I like Josh Smith, but I feel like he would regress here. Part of the reason his game improved the last couple seasons is that his shot selection got reigned in and he stopped shooting so many 3's. JOB's offense will play right into his worst habits.

Just what I was thinking. But hey, hopefully Smith would play half a season at most under JOB right?

Valid concern, however, i don't think O'Brien is here for the long haul.

I wouldn't mind a combo of Smith for Hibbert and a 1st but that's not happening on both sides. No from Atlanta and no from Indy. That's a 60% for both teams. Smith fits Atlanta better and same for Hibbert and Indy.

I would make those trades too. But, would really be surprised if Atlanta accepted any of these offers.

I think some expirings + George + Hansbrough could get it done. You might think that's too much to give up, but Josh Smith would be perfect here. We'd still have capspace to fill in our gaps.

Inteesting thought. They both would need to show improvement over the first half of the season for Atlanta to consider this. But, if that happens I could see where it could be too much to give.

I don't think this is likely to happen, but that'd be nice if it did without Pacers having to give up Hibbert, granger, collison

It's not like Josh Smith is an aging vet or anything. I'd gladly give up George for Josh Smith. PG may turn into something special sure, but Smith already IS special and still has plenty of life left.
