Something I can't remember, or never knew to begin w/. Why did we get rid of Rick Carlisle? And a follow up, would this team play better under his style of coaching? Yeah, I know, it's all what ifs, but I'm bored at work.

Same reason we got rid of Jermaine O'Neal and all them, and no, I don't think so, but I do think we'll play even better for the next coach.

I think it was because Carlisle had the 61-win season his first year. Then each year our record kept getting worse. I remember when he was here I couldn't stand him but now I don't even remember why.
Tinsley didn't like his offense either. It was too slow and he didn't like calling plays every possession.

Ah, 61 win season, Tinsley playing with passion and averaging over 10 ppg and 8 or 9 ast a game! Miss those days!

Carlisle's firing came just after the team missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Now we're going on 3 years+ since.

That was totally not his fault, he is historically a great coach. It wasn't his fault the team basically destroyed itself.

I remember seeing somewhere that Bird has said that firing Carlisle is his biggest regret as president of the Pacers.

^^^ It should be. Especially considering the byproduct of firing Carlisle was hiring JOB.

I think it was that he regretted that he had to do it, but it had to be done.
The team had disintegrated, through no fault of Carlisle's. However, everything had collapsed, and Carlisle just seemed worn out. The only smile he flashed all year long was at the press conference where they announced he was relieved of his duties. He looked like the monkey had been ripped off his back.
It was just time. For the Pacers, yes, but especially for Carlisle.

I've heard Larry say a team quits listening to the same guy after about three years.
I remember thinking when we fired Carlisle that the chances of replacing him with someone as good were remote. I doubt if there are many guys around the league who rate O'Brien as highly as Carlisle.

maybe Carlisle today but that wasn't the Carlisle we had. he was a micro-manager back then calling a play every time down the court. after he was fired and got to watch for a year, he loosened up. O'B tends to insist on the scheme he brings to training camp (he'll rethink things over the summer) but his offense is fluid and adjusts to the defense. bottom line, OB is a better coach than given credit for but he and Bird both value experience highly and don't want to give up too many wins today for player development next year. as I ticket holder, I can't say that I completely disagree as a whole year of the equivalent of preseason games wouldn't be fun to watch.

So what about Popovich and Jackson? I know, I'm being dumb haha.
