Anyone see where he is having another season ending knee surgery???

How does someone have such a talented high school career and a decent freshman year of college and turn into a bust???

Greg Oden's situation mirrors Bender's time here with the Pacers.

I don't understand why he is so unhealthy. If he doesn't take off next season, he might as well retire.

It sucks ya know, especially after watching him all of high school

I remember watching several of Oden's games with LN with another Indiana All-Star basketball head coach and just hearing the coach curse Keefer and his lack of respect for his player's health. He could tell that Oden was playing hurt with a bum ankle and wrist his senior year of high school but Keefer used him for his championships. All that usage is simply showing it's breaking point now.

So, basically, you guys are telling me I shouldn't take a flier on Greg in the fantasy league?

Some people just aren't healthy, ya know? In the old days, they would say, "oh, she's sickly". No particular problem, but just repeated general health issues.

When you're as big as Oden, injuries are more likely to happen. There's more weight, on a frame that may have developed oddly. Simmons called it way back when - there is just something off about Oden. The way he walks even indicates that his body ain't right.


It's too bad. He was the most hyped up prospect since LeBron James, bar none. And it has all ended sadly.

I would say his only hope is eastern medicine - yoga and **** like that. Kareem managed to stay so healthy because he was doing yoga way back when. Oden needs like a shaman at this point.

It's his diet.

If the Portland health staff were smart enough to put him on an All-Milk IV Drip for the remainder of the season, he'll be right as rainbows.

You really have to feel for him, it's just terrible news. I think he still has some hope left of having a somewhat productive career, but any chance of him living up to the status of a #1 pick is thrown out the window. It certainly doesn't help that the man drafted after him, Kevin Durant, is now the dandy of the entire league.

Portland has famously passed on two hall of famers, but it wasn't their fault, really. Injuries can't be picked.

It is too bad, and i feel for him but wasn't he injury prone going into the draft? I think i heard he had an injury as a kid, early in HS or just prior to HS that made him miss a lot of time, and also that wrist injury he had while at Ohio State that he played through. Injury prone and being a giant like him, you have to wonder how long his back and knees will take, i just don't think it was wise for Portland to pick him that high up. I understand the thinking, they were aiming for the stars, but, the signs where there. It's a good risk for teams but not in the top 5 and not with Kevin Durant sitting right there.

That said, i still think Pacers should sign him next summer. It'd be a good PR move, the kid is a very good person, the deal would be cheap, and best case is, he "makes it" at some capacity in the NBA and we'll have one of the best stories and a very solid back up center on the team.

I don't think a GM would've picked Durant over Oden unless they were running the Magic. It's like saying somebody would've taken Melo over LeBron it wasn't going to happen.

I don't think so. James was the #1 guy for years, while there was lots of debates between Oden vs. Durant going into that draft. Even the day of, many thought Blazers would pick Durant. It wasn't a slam dunk. If Oden stayed healthy, it'd be a moot point, because he'd dominate, but, the getting a guy his size is already a risk for back and knee injuries and the dude had a history of getting hurt. They took a big risk and now are paying for it.

People thought Oden would be the #1 pick if he came out of high school as a Junior. Media always tries to make it seem like there's a chance another player might go #1, just to get more views. Oden was going #1 no matter what happened.

The sound philosophy is that bigs are more valuable. Hence, when you look at all the busts, they are usually highly-picked bigs that ended up sucking. Olowakandi, Kwame, Bowie, Milicic, etc.

Im pretty sure they polled GM's on who they would have taken, and like 75%+ said Oden.

Happens all the time, no surprise.

Oden was supposed to be the next great big man, so the only teams that would've passed on him were the ones that already had a great center aka very few.
