THE SKINNY

Image

The Pacers managed to stay with Boston through all of 3 quarters before falling apart in the 4th and failing to slay their 3rd major giant. Now the Pacers are coming off an embarrassing home loss courtesy of the Memphis Grizzlies, and hope to regain their offensive form against the well-rested C's who were defensively manhandled by the Magic.

THE LINEUPS

Image

Point Guard
ImageImage
In lieu of Rajon Rondo, Darren Collison goes up against Nate Robinson, who is interesting because Krypto-Nate is perhaps the only point guard that is shorter than Collison, faster than Collison, and a higher leaper than Collison. Darren's jumper is very good if he can lift over his opponent, so on offense he shold use his height and he should use his size on defense. Robinson can get hot if you let him run around and make jumpers, so sticking close to him and taking advantage of his turnover-prone tendencies will be key.

Shooting Guard
ImageImage
While he is putting up nice numbers for a 3rd option, Mike Dunleavy's real contribution is on boards and playing without the ball. He needs to improve the consistency of his jumper or the starting job will no longer be his. Ray Allen cannot carry the Boston offense like Paul Pierce can, but if he gets going, the Celtics become nearly impossible to beat. He has had historically big games against the Pacers.

Small Forward
ImageImage
Danny Granger has to take it upon himself to right the ship. With the offense floundering against Memphis, he has to step up against Boston and assert himself by getting to the line. He also has the responsibility of checking Paul Pierce and keeping the Celtics captain from getting on his game. Hopefully Granger remembers what Artest taught him, since Artest is the best Paul Pierce stopper out there.

Power Forward
ImageImage
Kevin Garnett and Josh McRoberts are both high-energy players. The difference is experience, polish, talent, and a bunch of other stuff that should be obvious. McBob needs to defend smart without getting dumb fouls. He should commit to stopping or drawing charges, not try and do something in between. He needs to put a bod on Garnett at all times. It would be best to be chippier against Garnett to frustrate him.

Center
ImageImage
Roy Hibbert has played like garbage the past few games. He's going against Shaquille O'Neal, who despite his age plays solidly for the Celtics. Hibbert needs to get going in order to rise to an all-star level.

THE BENCH

Image

ImageImage
ImageImage
ImageImage

Brandon Rush is still playing solidly off the bench. Unfortunately, the play of TJ Ford and James Posey has been subpar recently. Neither is shooting over 40%. Glen Davis is a strong player. Marquis Daniels, a former Pacer, plays the main wing position for the Celtics.

THE COACHES

Image

ImageImage

Jim O'Brien needs to find a way to get the offense on track. Meanwhile, despite a loss in their last game, the Celtics still hold the top record in the East. The Pacers are dropping too many games at home, and the players and coaches need to figure some stuff out.

THE INJURY REPORT

Image

Pacers
None.

Celtics
Rajon Rondo - Ankle: Probably not.
Delonte West - Wrist: Out.
Kendrick Perkins - Knee: Out.

THE HEAVY MATTERS

Image

-Get to the line. The Pacers have to start being as aggressive on offense as they are on defense. If no one's scoring from inside, it makes spacing the floor useless.
-Get a new coach. Please.

THE TRADITION

Hibs got four fouls early in third and guarding a quicker, smaller guy.
Take him out fool!

I'd give Tyler a shot on Baby. He may get mauled but he is feisty and can get some back on his end and most importantly keeps Hibb out of trouble.

great game thread. I hope the guys can break out of their shooting slumps in this one. Danny, Roy I am looking at you. Also im starting to think this headless chicken offense sux. It certainly is not using Darren Collisons skills to their strengths.

MD hurting us.
Slick said "It's a simple thing to fix, let D Jones guard MD and Rush can bring the ball up for a minute.
Instead 5'10" Ford guards him and Posey jacks threes. Not optimal.

"Pacers insist on guarding Marquis with those tiny guards, and it is costing them."

checked out the shot chart
over ESPN Gamecast.

bulk of the shots at the 4th
were taken from the perimeter
and most of them were clunkers
(highlighted by Danny's 5-21 FGs /
0-6 3PTs).

Rush sat out far too long and
returned with less than a minute
remaining.

Hibbert sat out most of the quarter
and didn't ever check-in again
(24 mins. total). our main" inside
presence" was Foster! (?)

in the meantime, the C's Gs were
getting in the paint – 'Quis, Allen,
PP, and (for crying out loud)
Von Wafer. and the perimeter
shots they made? clean looks.

there has got to be a better way
of playing D, executing the offense,
and establishing a rotation.

i say go with Rush over Duns,
let DC go freestyle and
let JOB just plain go!

Agree with most of what you said--I'm tired of Obie's stupid offense--I'm tired of seeing us live or die with the three!--and moronic substitution patterns--we're seeing way too much of Posey and Ford when we should be seeing what the kids, especially Hansborough, Price and George can do. Price should be backing up Collison--NOT Ford. Hansborough needs to be seeing minutes ahead of Posey, who isn't anything close to a four. George needs to be getting minutes somewhere.

We have an inside presence we are not utilizing well in Hibbert. We have a primo young PG in Collison we are msiusing as well.

This is starting to look like another wasted year because of O'Brien. he needs to go!

I posted the exact same thing on the GD board, when someone told me O'Brien got an extension.

I really wanted to see Rondo play. I've never seen him play in person.

2 things I took from the 2nd half of this game.

1. Lance should've played in this game when they were playing Allen at point guard. If not Lance then at least AJ.

2. O'Brien has no idea what he's doin.

Is it safe to say we have the worst coach in the league?

I don't think he's the worst coach by a long shot but he got out coached last night. he is sure stubborn. I don't know that there was anything to be done that would have won the game after Boston turned up their game in the second half, but you have to try something. Either match up or try to do something to expose Boston's lack of a true point guard - run, press full court, something.

I felt our guys played pretty well for 2 quarters, but our offense was just absolutely stifled the second half. The adjustments were few and far between too. We had no answer for Marquis Daniels at the PG defensively, and Rush/Hibbert were nowhere to be found down the stretch. I'm just left scratching my head.
