dunno. not really a big fan.
the guy hasn't played much
3 years in. and that says
something if his teams
weren't going to give him
minutes.
more impressed by what
we're seeing from tyler
considering how supposedly
highly-touted randolph is.
if JOB's still the coach by
the deadline, we're probably
better off keeping the pick
since he probably won't play
randolph anyway.
just my take.

Honestly, i was all for Randolph this past summer, but now my feeling have cooled. We're pretty much trading a valuable first round pick for a 21-year old project who's been in the league for three years. He hasn't done anything this season for the Knicks. He doesn't even have any mind blowing games and plays less then Josh McRoberts does when he's in the doghouse.
But, i guess the same could be said about Jermaine O'Neal when he was in Portland. He was also raw when he came here and still a project with little to show for.
Another thing to consider, is Pacers will not be in the lottery this year, probably picking around the 14-15th spot in the draft. Is Randolph's value/prospect better then what we could have with that pick?

I'd say we're around the 15-16 range, seeing as how 14th is still lottery territory. Even with that little nitpick, let's use that pick on a guy that I feel better about, Chris Singleton (trade down). He's much more defined as a player, not a steaming mess of potential, fills the Jeff Green mold of player, and can play two forward spots, instead of getting pushed around by 1-5.

Good call on the correction.
Are you saying Chris Singleton > Anthony Randolph?
Because, that is my point exactly as to why it may not even hurt us to make that trade. I don't see much value in a guy like Singleton, Trey Thompkins or Kyle Singler. Although I do like Derrick Williams, but his size makes me wonder if he will be able to score at the same level as he does in college. But, still, wouldn't Randolph be worth the risk over any of those guys?

He hasn't shown much at all. What I'm saying is we can trade down for assets with Singleton, or trade up come draft time for somebody better. I'd rather keep the pick since it'll allow more flexibility and by itself seems less risky than Randolph. We'll have way more options with the pick. It doesn't seem like he's ready this year anyways.

Right but he is just 21. I am split on it. I don't think he's really worth it but i just don't think picking in that area will help us either, and i just don't know what we can land with that pick. It doesn't seem like a very deep draft class. I guess it just depends on how much Larry Bird likes Randolph and what type of upside he can have?

I'd trade a lottery protected pick for him.

Exactly. I'm torn but i think we can take the risk. I'd take him over any late-lottery pick any time of the day. He may not end up as a starter (considering Hansbrough's development) but he would be a good addition to the Pacers' young core. I just hope he'll be more durable than Bender was.

did some research on YouTube –
found basically the good things
he's capable of doing, of course
(a.k.a. highlights). if you want a
glimpse, here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CDefTdwIx0still borderline for me in terms
of trading a future 1st.
toward the end of the video,
though, was an interesting
quote by Lamar Odom on
this guy:
"It's like looking at the mirror
a little. He's 6'11", he's left-handed,
and he can put the ball on the floor.
He's two times as athletic as I was
at that age. … If he stays focused,
the sky is the limit for him."but then again, in spite of the
potential, just why hasn't
he been given the burn?
this is really the polarizing question
as to whether it would be wise to
trade for him.
just another take.

This summer I was all for it. However, I think it's odd that he's not really getting any minutes after the Knicks thought he was going to be their starting PF. I am just worried there is something behind the scenes that is going on. I think I would be willing to part with a lottery protected first because you can see in the above video that he oozes potential. But I would make the decision with caution too.
Edit:
Although I guess Amare being there could also be a major factor, but I'd still like to see more from him.

I'll throw another name out there. JuJuan Johnson will be a better NBA player than Anthony Randolph. In three years in the NBA has Randolph evolved as a player at all? Whereas Johnson has improved remarkably every year since he was a freshman. Give me the guy who has shown the capacity/willingness to improve.

Keep the pick and draft Jordan Williams, soph. out of Maryland (6-10, 260lbs, 17.7/12.1).
AR is a waste. He is too fragile to do what we need him to do, which is bang down low. He is nothing more than a 6'11" SF.
The difference between he and JO is that JO didn't get any playing time on a loaded Portland team. AR couldn't crack the rotation for the lowly Warriors for crying out loud.
He is not worth our first unless it is between the 28-30 range. So I guess I'd do it if we added top 28 protection, then top 25, then top23. After that it turns into two 2nds.

Top 28 protected means that they only get it if we make 2nd best record in the whole wide league.

I totally agree. Most mocks have him going early second.

While I wouldn't mind getting him for a lottery protected 1st, I do question whether or not it's a wise idea. If he can't get off the bench in NY, then it's not likely he'll get any playing time under O'Brien.

Randolph has failed in NY. So what? You can all still see that this guy is no total bust, doesn't-belong-in-the-nba type guy. He's had some awesome games and moments. Take a chance on him. Give him minutes, find a good situation for him.
I think trading a first and dahntay jones for randolph is probably a good move in the long run for the pacers. We've done decently over the last few years with our mid-first round draft picks. Some solid guys (Granger, Hibbert) we've also had some duds (Shawne Williams over rajon effing rondo. I'll never forgive you larry bird) and a bunch of 'to be determined' (Hansbrough, Rush, George).
If we put proper protection on this pick, I think this is a move that pays off in the long run. Randolph, even though every one has just utterly given up on him, is still just 21
Bill Simmons wrote about Randolph:
He's one of the most breathtaking rookies I've seen in person -- ever -- for all the reasons you just described. There has never been anyone quite like him. He's like a cross between Josh Smith and Lamar Odom, only if you fed him 10 Red Bulls and told him right before the game, "If you can make 10 things happen during the 10 minutes you play tonight, we will quadruple your salary and you will start for the rest of the season" ... and then he does just that, but the coach reneges on the promise so Anthony has a near-crying meltdown on the bench. That's every Anthony Randolph game. I caught him once and, in the span of two hours, he made three "MY GOD!" plays and broke down on the Warriors' bench because Nellie wouldn't put him back in, followed by an assistant consoling him through an entire timeout like Randolph was a third grader who got in trouble for something he didn't do, then had a meltdown and got kicked out of class. It was riveting. The odds of me missing another Clips-Warriors game for the next five years are 10,000-to-1.
I mean, seriously, watch this video and tell me you aren't still interested in what this guy could become if he got it together and delivered near this level consistently:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgyybTWnyaYThis kid was 19, suddenly in the NBA, getting huge expectations put on him... while playing for Don Nelson and the Warriors.
Suddenly on a new team, behind a superstar like Amare and in a new system and city and unable to get minutes.
You go to a team like Indiana. No real expectations. A position with minutes, but not as much pressure. You're between Hibbert and Granger. That seems like a positive spot for a young guy trying to get his game together.
I would love for us to do it. The guy is 21, but people are acting like his career is over, which is absurd.

Seems like a big baby who needs people to tell him he's awesome all the time or something. Also, lots of better GM's passed on Rondo.

I'd send the first + filler for him. I do not see anything real fascinating at around 18 in draft and the video highlight of him is impressive. He has a lot of maturing to do but who doesn't at 21.
Like to see him put on some weight and muscle but just give him some minutes and encouragement and I'd bet he'll be worth the investment.
I'd still try to get Nene or West and a BU 5.
