Has Vogel done enough to earn the Top job for the next season?
I think the team showed us that they like Vogel and his style and want to play for him, is this enough to get him over the line?

Personally I'd like to see Vogel get the chance to lead the team for the next season and see if we can carry on from this season, win more games and possibly get Home court advantage come finals time 2012.
As part of this, I would love to see a experienced head coach sitting next to Coach V, I say chase Mike Brown (ex Indy, Cavs).

i'm good with vogel. i think

i think above all things we
need to address this offseason,
we'll need continuity in the
middle of change. vogel and
bird back would assure that.

i like the idea of having
an experienced coach
next to him but i'm not
sure brown's that guy.

brown would surely be
heavily recruited for other
openings and, if ever, a
big name as a lieutenant
might give frank the feeling
that he has to look over his
shoulder.

maybe someone like marc
iavaroni would be better – 
not such a big name, but
a whiz with the X's and O's.

I'm not sold on Vogel. I like him, and he should be at least an assistant. I think that this team needs a coach who can both deliver a sophisticated game plan and attract free-agents. Adelman, Mike Brown or Lawrence Frank would all fit this bill, as well as getting the most from the group.

My only knock on Vogel is the success is in his 'simplified game-plan', as I keep hearing. I don't know if a simplified game-plan will work long-term, and Indy might be searching for a coach again before long. My vote is overwhelmingly for Mike Brown.

after watching the two press conferences, I'd say it is Vogel with at least one new assistant provided Bird stays. a new top man opens everything up, but I think if Herb brings Larry back he'll bring Frank back. at least one new assistant would then fill the spot that Frank used to hold. whether others would move on or be asked to move on would be Frank's call. they were O'Brien hires. I don't think it would be a good idea, however, to bring in an NBA former head coach retread as as assistant as that could easily lead to an unclear chain of command.

I like the idea of Vogel with a completely new staff under him (of mostly his choosing, with some direction from an experienced voice like Bird).

The thing that impressed me about Vogel most is that he learned throughout the season, and changed quite a bit. At first, he was just the happy go lucky, feel good coach who apparently let some of the vets march over him a bit. As the year went on, we heard from guys like Wells and Kravitz that Vogel started to stand up much more and put some of the vets in their places. His ability to turn the team back after that 5 game losing streak and be competitive against the Bulls in the playoffs is quite impressive.

Vogel's gameplanning has been great, looking at the series. If he had an offseason to begin adding some offensive consistency and good defensive schemes, I think we'll have strong coaching for the next year.

coaching is about knowing what is right for the team at the moment. I see no reason to assume that his decision to simplify the office after taking over from O'Brien means that he will never add complexity. at this point I hope he and Bird both come back. I'd like to see what he can do with a full summer and training camp - obviously a lock out could limit things but do you want to switch leaders if preparation is slowed by a lock out?

As I said though, I like Vogel but I'm not sure he has what it takes to get this team to the next level. If a new coaching staff came in, with some experience and proven track records, then maybe I'd feel different. I like the idea of Mike Brown being HC with Vogel as lead assistant. It's still a promotion on where Vogel was this time last year.

I watched an Australian football game the other day, and they played on a huge round field. Also it seemed like some of the passes went forward instead of lateral or behind. I thought that was illegal.

In America we just borrow a football or soccer field.

Yeah, I never realized how many Pacers fans there are down under.

Personally, it's not a matter of the team being competitive as much as it is the fact that the games just are not enjoyable. Even when we were going 61-21, I felt the same way. The atmosphere/the entertainment/you name it, the games just are not as fun to attend. Maybe the novelty of all of the timeout/halftime shows wore off as I grew older, but we played well in all of the games I attended and I still felt no inclination to go to another.

(I went with friends who had tickets, so no money out of my pocket, for those who would be wondering why I kept attending games if i didnt enjoy them)

Ha. Yeh you can kick it any way you'd like. It's a great game to watch, I go most weeks. Also, just for the record, a few of the Pacers-Bulls series of the late 90's (sorry I had to bring them up) were heavily screened in Australia at the time, and so the Pacers became well-known. Personally, I watched the game when Reggie Miller scored 57 against Charlotte in '92 at age 4 and was hooked.
