and here is a longer story from pacers.com
http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/george_named_nba_all_rook_team_110511.htmla coaches vote is a coaches vote, but I would have had a hard time voting him behind Gary Neal. Landry Fields might deserve to be ahead of him. I have no problem with Wall and the bigs being first team.

I'm glad he got it. I wasn't sure where he'd fall in these rankings considering the lack of run he got under JOB. But well-deserved. I think it's safe to say that if he'd had a worthy coach all-along, he'd have gotten that 5th slot in the 1st team. Ah well.
On a side note, I'm kind of surprised Gary Neal beat Greg Monroe for the last slot on the 1st team. I guess San Antonio's record compared to Detroit's tipped it in his favor.

looks to me like they took a point guard, two wings, and two bigs. Monroe being a big wasn't in direct competition with the wings.

The articles I've seen say they vote without regards to position.
http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2011/5/11/2 ... -john-wallHere is the full breakdown of the votes. Rookies received two points for a first-team vote and one point for a second-team vote. The teams are made up without considering positions.
Monroe just got snubbed probably because coaches didn't pay attention to Detroit. With Monroe, Favors, and George could the 2nd team be better in 5 years than the first team? Obviously, Griffin and Wall look like studs, but who knows with Cousins and I think Neal and Fields are solid players, but have limited upside.
Ed Davis probably deserved to make the 2nd team as well, and he was barely beaten out by George.

Gary Neal and Landry Fields got farther in the playoffs. OH WAIT.
Neal is an inspirational story though. This goes in the Grant Hill all-star selection and Kurt Warner brand of awards. I'm fine with it.

Rankings are irrelevant unless you take into account a players potential. The fact PG is already playing well against the very best is encouraging.
His defensive assets alone are off the charts. His speed, length, and decision making are rare, and they will eventually enhance his play to a level most pros can only dream about. Mechanically speaking he is so smooth, and has complete control over his tall frame, he might be the quickest 6'9" player in the league.
We are lucky to have a player with so much potential, not since JB24 have I been this excited about a young Pacer.

The difference? 3 inches and a couple of working knees. I'll take knees 25/8.

I bit into the Shawne Williams hype. Hard. And David Harrison. I think George is different, to say the absolute least.

^^^ Agreed. This feels like two very different people we're dealing with, comparing George to Williams.
I don't remember real well, but didn't Williams' troubles and attitude start fairly early? From everything you hear about George, he's a driven and genuinely good dude. Plus, after investing first-round picks into headaches like the Shawne Williams and David Harrisons of the world, we all know golly-dern well that Larry Bird has done his homework and then some in terms of drafting good people. The fanbase is as strong as it has probably been since the Brawl and there's no way he's going to jeopardize this again.

Shawne was a "hard working young man" during his first season with "flashes of future brilliance". I believe his first indiscretion was in the summer after his rookie year (where we're at right now with PG).

otoh, we could sure use the Shawn Williams who played for the Knicks this year. he's matured from a skinny wing player to a solidly built power forward. it took him a while to distance himself from his friends and we did not have the community relations space to wait him out, but if he were in this year's draft, wouldn't you take him?
