Shaw to interview for Lead Assistant under Vogel

From Mike Wells via Twitter:
"Brian Shaw will interview with Frank Vogel and Larry Bird this week for the Pacers lead assistant coach position, according to a source." -http://twitter.com/MikeWellsNBA
What do you guys think? A guy who has good credentials to be a head coach is assuming the same role from a title contender. I Didn't expect this from Shaw and didn't think Vogel could lure such a good assistant to Indy, if it goes down.

A former player who has been under the tutelage of Phil Jackson for the last few years? By all means, bring him in if you can. Good pickup by Vogel if he can pull it off. Hopefully Shaw could potentially replace Terry Porter on that rumored list of assistants...never understood that one.

This seems like it would be a good good hire. Shaw has been rumored to be a strong head coaching candidate for a number of teams and has always had the ringing endorsement of Kobe Bryant.

I think it would be a great hire. Does anybody know why he got rejected for the Lakers job? I thought he was like a coach-in-waiting?
Either way, i would love him here as an assistant. May only be for a season before he gets a gig somewhere else next year, though.

Put in a good word M4E.
I agree with others. Shaw has enough experience that Frank could rely on him for solid advice in certain situations. Brian is certainly a step-up in our assistant coaches department, and I am sure he won't be cheap.
If Frank is comfortable with him, it may be worth paying Shaw's salary, especially considering Frank will probably be the lowest paid coach in the league.

Shaw was never an official "coach-in-waiting", but was merely favored by the public and Phil Jackson to take over. However, after Tex Winters retired, it seemed that when Phil was retiring, the Lakers were going to move a bit away from the triangle offense focused coach, and focus more on the defensive focused coach. Mike Brown is a great defensive coach, and in the past has done a pretty good job of dealing with a superstar in LeBron James. I think he'll be great with Kobe.
But count me in as shocked and impressed by this possibility. Even if he's only here one year, this is the type of hire that I think will only make the bench better. I like Vogel a LOT more with solid coaches under him. I would still like to get an older veteran coach who maybe has been a head coach but has no chance to return as a head coach (think Del Harris or PJ Carlesimo) on the bench as well.

It's ironic we've already mentioned Frank Hamblen as an assistant & now Shaw. Does Bird intend on making a clean sweep of Phil's staff or what?

Yes! This is exactly what I've been waiting for. He liked what he saw here in Indiana, and to have him back alongside Vogel would be perfect for us. I can't wait to see if this happens, but if it does it helps us right away.

I'm not sure I'd like that our assistant coach would be a better head coach than our actual head coach if that went down. imo

Well, seeing as how Shaw has yet to be a head coach, I'm not sure a comparison can be made....

Well we'll c how good Vogel is when not being looked at through JOB-tinted glasses. OK?

No. You're response has no meaning.
Your statement is that Shaw is a better head coach than Vogel already. That's all. You're not making a comment on pure coaching talent, you're talking about who is a better HEAD coach right now. One is a head coach. The other has yet to be. There's the difference.

Does this mean that Vogel is confirmed as our Head Coach?
When did this happen? How many years is his contract?

No, it's not confirmed, nor officially signed. It appears, though, that the job is his, so long as he can nail down some solid and experienced assistant coaches. Brian Shaw would certainly go a long way towards rubber stamping that job for Vogel.

Thanks Scoot, I thought as much.

Yeah, it seems like really the only thing missing is pen-to-paper. They wouldn't be interviewing assistants unless they practically had their head coach. And since there's been zero mention of any other names recently that have been linked to the Pacers job - Dwane Casey, Lawrence Frank, Rick Adelman, etc. - it seems like it's only a matter of time before Vogel is officially back.
