The NFL got their stuff sorted out faster than originally thought. The NBA has way less money to toss around.

A lot of theories I've seen online is that they haven't expected tons of movement to this point. The main reason the NFL's deal came together so quickly was when the threat of lost games, workouts, and such became very real. The NBA could react the same way in about a month or so.

The difference between the NFL and the NBA is that the NFL is making a lot more money than they admitted. They saw the falling economy and thought it was a good time to try to bluff the players out of another billion dollars. The players called their bluff long enough that there was a threat of lost games. This means lost wages to players, but bigger lost wages to owners. They scrambled and came up with a deal everyone could agree on before they lost money.

The players of the NBA seem to be trying the same thing. "You don't want to pay us, then fine. We'll go play in Yugokabakistan." The owners are offering rides to the airport. More than half of the teams in the NBA come out ahead if there is no NBA season. While players like Deron Williams and Kobe Bryant may get big deals to go overseas, how many NBA players are really going to get contracts that allow them to leave mid-season? As many leagues are out there, no team wants to invest its entire future on mid-level NBA players who may leave 2 months into the season. The players that go overseas are only causing negotiations to drag on longer and hurting the other players. New York and LA may be chomping at the bit to get this thing going, but I think we're in for a fairly long ride considering the 22 teams that supposedly lost money last year have nothing to lose and everything to gain from waiting this one out, even if it goes longer than this entire season.

it's possible that even though you are losing money you'd lose more not less if you cancelled games. you've still got to pay the rent and all the front office people.

Possible, yes. Depending on the team's deal with the city, most if not all still have to pay large amounts to keep their courts up. Front office personnel also have to be paid. Some teams that are losing money may lose a little more this season if games aren't played. However, that doesn't mean these teams don't have more to gain from a lost season. A lost season means at LEAST 75% of the players are unemployed for a year, more players' contracts have expired so they will have no guarantee of how much they'll make when they come back, and, given that the huge numbers threatening to go overseas actually do, I see a legitimate NBA star getting hurt and all sorts of litigation over whether or not the injury voids his huge contract when he comes back. I'm not saying that the owners are better off sitting back and making sure another NBA game is never played, just that they are better off if this season is cancelled.
