Playoffs Game 1: Pacers vs Magic, 7:00 EST (caution)

Look out below.

THE SKINNY

Image
The number three seed Pacers play host to the number six seed Magic in the opening round of the playoffs. The Pacers look to assert their dominance and gain some momentum with which to face the next opponent. The Magic are trying to keep their hopes alive and prove that they are a strong team even without the presence of a Superman. These two teams are coming into the playoffs seemingly headed in opposite directions. However, the Magic were 3-1 against the Pacers during the regular season.

THE LINEUPS

Image

Point Guard
ImageImage
After insertion into the starting lineup, George Hill and the starting unit have been firing on all cylinders, producing triple-digit outputs with regularity. Meanwhile, the Magic have been outputting much below their season average without Howard to attract defensive attention. Jameer Nelson has had problems being a consistent producer this season, shooting a career-low from the field.

Shooting Guard
ImageImage
Paul George has been quieter as of late, but is probably the x-factor when it comes to the Pacers' playoff chances. The Magic have been running different lineups for a while now, but whoever is running SG for the Magic will be an assassin from deep. The Pacers need to come prepared to defend the pick and roll, and close out on shooters. Richardson isn't just a shooter, so George has to be his usual defensive self.

Small Forward
ImageImage
One thing is clear. When Granger does well, so do the Pacers. He needs to be efficient against a defense that has lost its biggest piece. Hedo Turkoglu is a very smart passer whose decision-making is very solid. He will be masked this game, but one-on-one against Granger is what the Pacers want to create.

Power Forward
ImageImage
This is where the matchups get interesting. The Magic will be able to stretch the Pacers, but the Pacers own the strength advantage. West will have to stay down on defense, and focus on rebounding. Ryan Anderson has been shooting it well all season, but when Howard went out it became much less easy for him to get his shots off. It is possible the Pacers go small to match up with the Magic and still have the talent advantage with Granger at the 4.

Center
ImageImage
Glen Davis is a deceptively quick big man whose wide body and balance will challenge Hibbert. Roy should establish himself in the absence of Howard as the best big center in the series, and impact it as such. This is the time where his all-star status will be tested, as well as his worth going into next season.

THE BENCH

Image

ImageImage
ImageImage
ImageImage
With Collison and Hansbrough manning the bench mob, the Pacers will need to find ways to press their advantage against a depleted but still sharpshooting Magic bench. Earl Clark has found ways to be effective, JJ Redick can heat up. The reserves have been routinely outscored by opposing benches, so the return of Barbosa and his playoff experience should help the Pacers get some offense going. The bench has a tendency to be inefficient.

THE COACHES

Image

ImageImage
Awkward doesn't even begin to describe Van Gundy's relationship with Dwight Howard. Frank Vogel is being mentioned by some as a COY candidate. The real test for Vogel is how he adjusts in a long playoff series when he and his team are outmatched from an experience standpoint.

THE INJURY REPORT

Image

Pacers
None.

Magic
Glen Davis: Ankle - Maybe.
Dwight Howard: Disc - No.

THE HEAVY MATTERS

Image

-Do not underestimate the opponent. The Pacers have to put the pedal to the metal and play 48 full minutes.
-Win the battle of the boards. The best way to disable shooters is to not let them have the ball.
-Limit turnovers for similar reasons.

THE TRADITION: Best of 7

Gotta drop in and say LETS GO. This is what we've been waiting for boys, lets do it! I would like to stay and chat, but I stand basically the whole time in playoffs and go nuts, so that won't work. Will check in at the half, where we will hopefully be winning, and postgame.

LETS GO BOYS!

Tough loss. Collison's shot late at the fourth was really a head-scratcher.
Notice how Nelson ALWAYS got into the paint and kicked it out to the shooters? That killed us, it's like Dwight making outlet passes. We need to better out perimeter defense, and look into inside scoring.

It's only one game and we should be capable of winning games in Orlando. Hope Granger has the capacity to put this game behind him because the he clearly choked in this one. It's one thing for your "go to guy" to come up a little short. Something all together different to have him fail as completely as Danny did last night. Having our point guards be completely schooled by Jameer Nelson would rank as my number two disappointment. And we can top it off with the litany of missed free throws that can be claimed that by the entire team. One would think they couldn't hope but play better the next time out.

Learning to consistantly pound home our advantage and not street ball it or get into the opponants rhythm is a big lesson that our young team needs to learn.
This loss was needed to that end.

A simple man to man with as little switching and double teaming as possible should be fine. Stay on your guy.
GET the rebound.
Take it inside every time unless you get a wide open shot or drive before you can set up.
West and Hib should dominate. Their bigs should be in foul trouble.
Our shooters should be taking open shots comming back from the inside, not quick ones or contested ones after wasting the clock.

Teams that don't use their strengths have really no advatage over a weaker opponant.

hit the free throws and this is easy. I thought DC deserved to be playing at the end because he was doing a better job on Nelson but I hope when I read the Star I won't find that Hill was hurt.

I had been thinking that it was probably okay to bring the girls back for the playoffs and of course I don't really believe there is a correlation but it is what it is.

Nice choking job.

Let's assume it will only get better.

Collison deserved to finish the game. He had one of those rare "I will play defense" days.

Offensively, we really can't do any worse. We played far below our capability as a team and I think the same doesn't hold true for the Magic.

Wizop, I am so salty right now so don't be ridiculous. I tried harder than the Pacers did in the last 4 minutes so I'm about to be insulted if you get superstitious.

actually, Orlando played below their capability they had shown for the past few games. And they have playoff veterans, which does make a difference

I'm not at all worried yet. If we eliminate free throws, we only scored in the low 60s from the field, shooting 35%. We had good looks, just couldn't get the rolls. Paul George looked a little timid for some reason, but hopefully he'll snap out of it by Game 2.

But between the unfriendly rolls, some sloppy ball-handling, and just bad luck and bounces when it came to Orlando getting offensive boards, plus guys like Nelson and Richardson hitting just throw-up junk shots, they can't bank on that every game. Granted, Orlando didn't play great, but as bad as we played, we only lost by 4.

no problem. Granger has all the blame as far as I'm concerned. I'm allocating none to the girls. two free throws, a bunny, and a turn over makes the goat pretty clear.
