Morway interviewing with Portland

Think it means anything? In terms of Larry Bird sticking around or not? I mean, I know Kevin Pritchard is in our circle, but still. If Larry seemed to be leaning towards leaving, I would think David Morway would be at least somewhat in the know about that. The fact that he's looking elsewhere, maybe it's just me reading too much into it or being a wishful thinker, makes me kinda think that Morway knows that the job might not be available next year.

Even if he knows for a fact Larry's leaving, I doubt he's been offered the job at this stage. They won't fill that position until Larry officially leaves. It's never a good idea to turn down interviews because you think you have a job. I wouldn't read too much into this.

Well, chances are if Bird retires, Morway takes over here in Indy.

In high-end exec positions like this, it's important for a guy like Morway to demonstrate that he has other options, that other teams are interested in him, so as to drive up the price/years on his contract with Indy.

Because if Herb Simon knows that Portland is willing to offer him $_____ over 3 years, then it's more likely that Simon will give him $_____+5 over 4 years.

I don't think there's any assumptions you can make about a possible Bird successor. This could go anywhere.

I had started a thread about this when word first broke about Morway interviews with the Blazers. Morway has to be pretty seriously interested in the job if he's willing to go through the whole interview process. Portland has a 3 step interview process with some extensive personality testing. The 3rd step in the process is a face to face meeting with Paul Allen and the Blazers management wouldn't take a GM candidate to Paul Allen if the candidate wasn't serious about the job.
