THE SKINNY

Image
It took an all-time performance from a duo of superstars to pull out a victory, and now the series has become tighter. With the West decided and Boston getting two cracks at sealing their series, the 2-2 matchup now gets all the attention. The Pacers couldn't do what they wanted to do while the Heat seemed to run slipshod over the Pacers reserve bigs. Now the series heads back to Miami for a very contested next two or three games.

THE LINEUPS

Image

Point Guard
ImageImage
Setting the tone early with a long three, George Hill finished the game only 2-9 from the field. He played good defense, though, and Mario Chalmers was held to 8 points. Hill will have to get some more shots in as he was instrumental in the Pacers' best game of the series. When he is efficient, it's one more area where the thin Heat have to compensate for with star power, and at a certain point that resource is not enough by itself for a victory.

Shooting Guard
ImageImage
Paul George did much better going at the basket than he did shooting threes, which have seemingly abandoned him since April. Dwyane Wade got his knee drained and took advantage of a depleted Pacers interior to reassert himself this series. If he adds his usually dependable jumper to his performance, it will be a long day defensively for George. Paul has to be smarter or stronger going to the basket, as he has had opportunities turned away without drawing a foul.

Small Forward
ImageImage
Lebron did his thing. Granger did his thing. Lebron's thing was more than twice Granger's thing...
It seemed to take a lot out of Lebron, and with only one night off between games the rest of the series, the 40-minute performances might wear on Lebron. Hopefully it does so sooner rather than in the next round.

Power Forward
ImageImage
With West out, Haslem shined. West was saddled with foul trouble all game, and Haslem came out and took advantage of clean looks generated by Lebron and Wade. The Pacers have to go back to defending without fouling, and West must be on the floor in order to be the anchor that he is.

Center
ImageImage
Hibbert found himself on the bench a lot but still was effective in the little time he played. There cannot be a repeat in the next game. Joel Anthony managed to get some offense going, and that's just bad news for the Pacers.

THE BENCH

Image

ImageImage
ImageImage
ImageImage
Collison came up big, but the rest of the bench had to play more minutes than they were used to. Lou and Tyler couldn't rotate and the Heat were getting shots inside the entire second half. Leandro Barbosa hasn't fit in as well as originally thought, and his poor shooting and second-guessing is one of the reasons the Pacers aren't holding on to leads when the bench steps in.

THE COACHES

Image

ImageImage
Spoelstra made his adjustment, whether it was something in the offense or just giving his stars free rein. Vogel had two decisions that could be second-guessed, although I wouldn't. One was not having Collison in at the end. The other was not inserting his starting bigs earlier than the 7-minute mark. Being Frank, expect to see little deviation from the original plan, as the last game by most standards was an extraordinary case, even by MVP standards.

THE INJURY REPORT

Image

Pacers
None.

Heat
Chris Bosh: Abdominal - No.

THE HEAVY MATTERS

Image

-Short memory. Luckily no one feels like nitpicking at the Pacers' loss with a microscope so it will be easier to focus on the task at hand.
-Limit their role players. If anyone in addition to Lebron or Wade gets double-digits, it will be much harder to win.
-Defend without fouling. Refs will be inconsistent, so try to adjust to the crew working this game.

THE TRADITION: Best of 7

I'm rooting for you guys.

Game 4 Loss:

Granger: 18 FGA
West: 8 FGA
Hibbert: 9 FGA

Game 3 Win:

Granger: 15 FGA
West: 13 FGA
Hibbert: 16 FGA

No reason for Granger to have more FGA than West and Hibbert combined. Pound that ball inside and cut down on the 3 pointers and you guys should win this.

Salty Knicks fans...everywhere.

Hope you enjoy your stay and we do appreciate the support. Only reason it happened that way was that West and Hibbert were in foul trouble. A lot of information is in the OP, doesn't anyone notice? :P

Tom Crean did us no favor getting Wade back on track. an extra day of rest helped too. let's hope playing on only one day of rest is harder for them tonight and Thursday. we must shorten our rotation. Paul can not sit when Wade is on the floor and Danny can not sit when LeBron is on the floor and Roy and David need to stay out of foul trouble so at least one of them is on the floor at all times.

One day rests work in our favor, Game 6 too only is two days after game 5. meaning the schedule's going to favor a team with depth and that's what we have over them.

Gotta learn from game 4 some precious lessons. It exposed our weakness and i hope for a better game.
Bottomline: we can't go small unless Lebron is on the bench.

Another thing, hope the guys will not leave Haslem open, that mid-range game kept them close, and it eventually won the game for them.

Ultimately, i'm hoping to see Fesenko when Hibbert rests. No pun intended. His size could be very helpful in clogging the lane, and he'll contest some shots and give "worthy" fouls.

Let's go Pacers!!!! It's fourteen against two!

I totally agree with your analysis Moooose.

We cannot simultaneously have both our bigs in foul trouble, maybe one, but definitely not both.

Our defense needs to employ a different strategy when fouling, basically everyone except Roy and West should be fouling LeBron James when necessary. After James blow, with a full rate of speed, it increases the liklihood our bigs will have to foul. Somebody needs stall James a couple times on the perimeter, my advice, go low. If the feet become entagled and he trips, so be it. When Haslem or whoever sets that high pick, I'd flop my body into James everytime, just to tangle him up.

Shut James down and Wade is toast, because he cannot create for himself anymore.

It would be less of a problem if Hansbrough could step it up. Our backups can't rebound as well.

I'm told the whole purpose of signing Fes was to have six more fouls for Howard. why that doesn't apply to LeBron, I don't quite understand but that seems to be the truth. if they think Jeff P is a better player than Fes, then they should try him if Roy gets in foul trouble. our inability to keep Roy in the game for enough minutes seems to be the key factor in the two losses. no one besides DC on the second unit is doing anything. depth is supposed to be our edge but six contributors isn't near enough depth.

If Fes is in the only way I can see it working is if we go zone. Lou can keep perimeter players in front of him much better in pick-and-roll situations. Fes has some smarts in those situations but last I saw he's not moving well enough for a team like the Heat.

^^ He doesn't have to move a lot, IMO. He should protect the paint like he owns it. Clubber any trespasser especially Miami's big two, and he could contest Haslem either.

By the way, M4E, Vogel's previous post-game interview hints he might go zone defense a lot.

He joked about it going into the 4th. He doesn't like the idea of it, but it might be a quick fix if Wade and Lebron get their two-man game going. The Heat have displayed many attack modes this season, and their early struggles came when they were doing what they are doing now, except against a zone.

I agre but West and Hibbert were severly limited due to foul trouble in game 4. So, it makes sense. But we have to pound the ball inside more as you said.

As good as Dwyane Wade and LeBron James were in game 4, I think it was actually the Heat's role players (in particular Haslem) that killed us at the end of the game. Here's the play-by-play for the 4th quarter and here's the entirety of the Heat's scoring over the final 8 minutes of the game (A LeBron basket at 8:11 marked the start of a 2 minute drought for both teams):

5:56 Udonis Haslem makes 12-foot jumper (Dwyane Wade assists)
5:13 Udonis Haslem makes 14-foot jumper (Dwyane Wade assists)
4:39 Dwyane Wade makes 10-foot two point shot
3:04 Udonis Haslem makes 10-foot jumper (Dwyane Wade assists)
2:15 Joel Anthony makes free throw 1 of 2
2:15 Joel Anthony makes free throw 2 of 2
1:10 Udonis Haslem makes 18-foot jumper (LeBron James assists)
0:16 LeBron James makes free throw 2 of 2
0:11 LeBron James makes free throw 1 of 2
0:11 LeBron James makes free throw 2 of 2

Over a 5 minutes stretch of the game, Haslem hit 4 jumpers from ~12 feet and Joel Anthony got to the line for 2 free throws. If your defense is forcing 10 foot + jump shots at the end of the game then you're doing a good job. No disrespect to Haslem who is the kind of guy every team would want to have but if he's the one getting open jump shots then I think you live with that as a defense. The Pacers still have a real shot and the main problem for us is keeping Hibbert on the court. He was in for that whole stretch and there's no Heat shot attempts from inside of 10 feet (aside from a few Battier tip attempts on offensive rebounds).

At this point, the Pacers should know what they need to do in order to win.
