Pacers will match Blazers' offer to Hibbert

Good news here. I'm happy to see the franchise being willing to spend to keep this group together.
Now let's hope we can get ourselves an OJ Mayo type guy and add some new talent before this deal is signed through.

Yup. Good to hear. Interesting to see where the rest of this falls into place this summer.

Re: Pacers will match Blazers' offer to Hibbert
Hibbert not signing the offer sheet works out great for us, we now have more time to add some bench talent before Hibbert's contract ties us up.
OJ Mayo would be great, he has real talent, maybe he just needs a change of scenery? If not he's unlikely to be expensive, with money around the NBA purportedly drying up for unsigned guys after the first Week or so.
Our starting 5 was statistically (+-, margin) already elite last season, both Hibbert and George are likely to improve, furthering that advantage. Our real weakness was actually a bench that frequently gave up leads earned by the starters. Our core group improving, and upgrading our bench will go a long way to making next year even better than this one, which was already great.

The other nice thing about doing it this way rather than just matching the offer on the 14th is that it signals that the team wants to take advantage of their cap room and therefore is willing to spend money to get better.

Like I said great outcome given the circumstances. We're already one the cusp on contention, it's on our team continuing to become more cohesive (vogel's first training camp should help, as well as Hill becoming more accustomed to being a full time point guard) and Paul George becoming the really good player we know he has the potential to be.
If George takes a leap next year towards his ceiling i'm not afraid of going to war against anyone, cap off the offseason rounding out the bench with some more talent (mayo, landry etc...) and we're in good shape.

That was true and I thought the same thing until the playoffs.
I haven't looked at the +/- in the playoffs but I live out of state and actually watched a couple games with my mom since nobody here cares about the Pacers. I remember getting upset that we blew leads and even more upset when Vogel would bring in the entire bench immediately after. And I was like "F me, we're screwed now". But the bench would go on a tear and put the Pacers back on top. Seemed like the starters blew lots of leads in the playoffs and it was up to the bench to get the games back in hand.
My mom noticed the same thing and she doesn't even watch basketball. She noticed that the bench actually carried the team a lot of the time during the playoffs. She got a lot of the calls right during the game too. I was pretty impressed actually lol

Stephenson's playoff +/-'s
-1 (4:37 playing time)
0 (:13 playing time)
-2 (1:12 playing time)
-11 (5:55 playing time)
total of -14 in about 12 minutes. Who do you like on the team anyway? You only seem to like Paul George and Lance. I want Lance to be good, but he hasn't been yet.
In that Miami series, there is a pretty big discrepancy between the bench and starters.
Game 1: starters -14, bench -31
Game 2: starters +59, bench -44
Game 3: starters +108, bench -13
Game 4: starters -6, bench -34
Game 5: starters -78, bench -82
Game 6: starters +13, bench -77
Series: starters +82, bench -281
Pendergraph and Dahntay were the only bench guys to ever put up a net positive. So, you can make a convincing case that the real key to turning this team into a contender is improving the bench. I have no problem moving Collison, Hansbrough or both but I think you hate on Collison too much Windy. I think maybe he didn't meet your expectations after the trade and you're still taking that out on him.

Re: Pacers will match Blazers' offer to Hibbert
I never thought he was any good. I wanted Ty Lawson. I told all the Hornets fans before we traded for him that he was overrated and put up empty stats. When we traded for him, I was more excited that we moved Troy Murphy than anything.

I never thought he would be as bad as he is though.

Do you have a whole bookmarked section of previous threads or something?
All I see from you in that thread is this:

This morning I woke up to see a 4 team trade headline, but I didn't think it had anything to do with us until I saw the blurb in the article about buying out Ford. This is excellent. It does make me wonder why I waste so much of my time on this site though. Every trade the Pacers have made over the last few years always comes completely out of nowhere and has no basis in the rumors that are usually floating around. Reading all of this stuff does not put me ahead of the game at all. It's just like a form of fan masturbation.
Whatever, today it's all worth it. Let's flip Posey to the Celts for Rasheed's retirement and Avery Bradley. Aim high.

Nah, I just remember everything, even if it's something as small or dumb as something like that. I don't know why.

Well, your hatred of Collison is both small and dumb, but haven't you since changed your tune and stated that you didn't even like unloading Murphy because Posey tied up our cap and we should have just held onto Murphy and let him expire?

Collison has been a disappointment, but I don't think he's terrible. I do think that your constant shots at him have affected the overall forum's point of view though so nice job by you.

And not play him. He's like Collison. He hurts the team by just getting PT. Neither should be rotational players. We would have saved money in the deal and people wouldn't be holding out false hope for Collison to actually become a good basketball player. When that time comes we can actually get a decent point guard to back up Hill. Maybe Stephenson can move into that role. All I know is Collison shouldn't get minutes in the NBA. He's just an awful basketball player.

quite a spin to how this
turned out.
'guess the question now is if
the FO still extends the 4/58
offer since there was no offer
formal offer sheet signed.
otherwise, it's like we matched
a rumor instead of a contract.
maybe Walsh/KP can re-nego
for the same amount for 5 years
instead? this would probably give
us more flexibility in so many
levels.
what do you is on Roy and his
agent's mind, though?
Sources: Blazers won't sign Hibbert
Updated: July 10, 2012, 6:12 PM ET
By Ric Bucher | ESPN The Magazine
The Portland Trail Blazers, convinced the Indiana Pacers will match their offer sheet of 4 years and $58 million to restricted free-agent center Roy Hibbert, will not officially complete the transaction and thereby allow Hibbert to re-sign outright, league sources said Tuesday.
The move is beneficial for the Blazers. If Hibbert did sign the offer sheet, the Pacers would have three days to match.
During those three days, the Blazers would have Hibbert's first-year salary in the deal removed from the cap space they have available to pursue other free agents.
The Pacers drafted Hibbert with the 17th overall pick in 2008 and the Georgetown product has seen his scoring and rebounding averages rise every season, reaching a career-high 12.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.
With Hibbert anchoring their frontcourt, the Pacers were 42-24 this year and lost to the Miami Heat in six games in the second round of the playoffs.

It will most likely be 4/58, he'll just wait a few days to sign it. I don't think it will be very complicated. We sign a player or two, then sign Hibbert and Hill. Makes the most sense for everybody.

Yup. I would have liked to see Mayo or Lee, and then either a PG or a PF. Hinrich would have been nice, especially at 2/$6 like he's going to Chicago for. I would have looked to move Collison at that point. Maybe Houston would have had interest and we could have gained one of Patterson, Morris, or TJones? Jones would have been the priority to me, as he could play either SF or PF.
Ultimately, we could have around $10 million to play with before re-signing Hibbert and Hill without hitting the luxury tax.

Re: Pacers will match Blazers' offer to Hibbert
With renouncing Price and no other certainty of picking up another PG, it looks like we either get Mayo here to be a combo guard (not looking likely according to Mike Wells) or Collison stays.
A bit of a shame though, I would have loved to flip him to Houston for Jones or Patterson.
