Brian Shaw

Brian Shaw is long overdue for a head coaching job, and it seems like he's had plentiful opportunities to leave his assistant coaching job with the Pacers and go to the Magic, Bobcats, and even the Trailblazers and be the head coach at any one of those jobs, but he can never seem to land one. He just pulled out of the Magic's head coaching job race, and it looks like he may actually return to the Pacers' bench for another year. I wonder if Shaw is doing this because the teams he's been named for the head coaching job at are rebuilding; he may want to go to a team that is already on its feet with a solid lineup.
He's named as one of the top candidates for any head coaching job on any and every NBA rumor site there is, and he still can't seem to land a job. The question is, why?

I didn't see anything specific on the Blazers job. In the cases of the Magic and Bobcat jobs it looked like he withdrew himself from consideration. I can see why. The Bobcats were historically bad last year and while they seem to righting the ship a bit, they're still a long ways off. The Magic are likely to trade Howard which makes the rest of the team a bunch of role players built around a star that isn't there anymore. Plus he'd have to deal with the Howard drama until the trade happens which also sucks.
There's a lot of former players that have brief coaching stints. It seems like the key to a long career is to get off to a good start and none of the jobs so far has been an obvious sure thing. You can probably miss your chance if you wait too long, but in recent history, I recall that Thibedau was a hot assistant name for a few years and stayed in Boston. Eventually, he got the Chicago job at a time when the team was ready to take off. I think finding the right situation is important and Shaw may be wise to wait this job cycle out. Selfishly I think we benefit from keeping him around as well.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the Blazers, I just listed them because they have an open coaching position and I wasn't sure whether he had been targeted or not.

Shaw hasnt interviewed for the Portland job yet. And Orlando has a lot of drama surrounding the team right now; with Dwight. Honestly I doubt any coach would want to have to work under that kind of drama especially considering the team has no identity with Dwight sitting out. He would be fired just as fast as he gets the job; due to performance; they'll be a lottery team next season. The bobcats simply didnt hire him; i dont think he withdrew; they went in another direction; which may have been good for him considering they likely wont be significantly better than last season. Portland is still an option for him.

Generally, when coaches have been notified they won't be hired, they withdraw from consideration. Shaw did it with Charlotte, and has now done so with Orlando.
I think, in general, Shaw is held back a little by being a "product of Phil Jackson and the Triangle Offense". It appears that teams are not giving him the benefit of the doubt of just being a solid coach.
He'll be a head coach soon. Maybe even Portland. They haven't interviewed anybody yet.

and if Mike Brown can't get LA to the western finals, don't be shocked if they'd come calling for Shaw to bring back the triangle.

Actually, I did find something about Shaw with the blazers.
No surprise here: Blazers have asked, and been granted permission, to interview Indiana assistant Brian Shaw for their head coach position
That's from Jason Quick's twitter (@jwquick).
It's from the 14th, so it's a little out of date, but it's something.

Sorry for the double post, but per Peter Vecsey, this is what actually happened to make Brian Shaw withdraw:
Source says Brian Shaw turned down Bobcats job cause Magic assured him herd get that job. When interviewing process continued he withdrew
That's fairly surprising, because as someone said above, it seemed like he was waiting for a team that wasn't in a rebuilding phase.
