Ian Mahinmi

Post#1 » by Solid » Tue Jul 31, 2012 12:56 am

I looked back a few months to see what our new players previous teams were thinking about their play.
Mahinmi sounds like a little taller Amudson with more upside. That's not bad.
Seems to have the work ethic that the team now clearly looks for. He's improving, and gaining confidence.
Doesn't block out well it seems but shows good defensive energy.
Listed as a pure center though he's not quite as big as Plumlee.

Another writer that seemed to know him well (sorry don't recall the source) said that Ian should do pretty well working with and around either of our starting bigs...But he thought rebounding would not be excellant in such tandems.

I liked this article:

Hes a frustrating guy. Hes athletic, has good hands, nice shooting touch out to about 15 feet. But he never seems to put it together. He commits a lot of silly fouls, disappears for weeks at a time. I hope he figures it out for you because he seems like a really cool guy but Im not sure hes ever going to get it.

He better be atleast that, and much much more. I like the energy Lou brought to the team, but Lou is a just that, a guy who will hustle and provide a spark through his energy.

Nothing against Lou, but theres guys you can find in the Developmental League who would die for a chance and would do all the small things too. Mean while, Mahinmi is so highly regarded by our front office that we traded Darren Collison for. Beyond that, we agreed to pay him $16 million over the next 4 seasons. That's nowhere near Amundson ballpark.

He's been playing well in the preseason with minutes, but what do you guys think his minute cap is behind West/Hibbert after seeing his play? Still only 10-15mpg?

Hibbert will probably get around 30 mpg and we've been playing Mahinmi at the 4 sometimes. He'll probably get around 20 minutes a game.

And your girlfriend is a slore.

I think he's a great fit for the role he's being asked to fill. Ultimately, I'm still not super excited with his contract (a little less money and a year or two less).

Line it up next to Hibbert's, and you'll be thrilled with it.

I agree, but if he begins to produce (and based on what I have seen pre-season it's a possibility) then you've got a solid backup 4/5 locked into a very reasonable deal.

It will all depend what he can do with his minutes, I'll remain optimistic though.

I was beyond impressed with him in the preseason. I had no idea he was so athletic. doing spin moves from the free throw line into a finger roll...WHAAAA!! lol....i hope he keeps it going, we really need that when hibbert goes to the bench. especially when him and hansbone are out there in the second unit. tyler and his lack of offense is really starting to bring me down

Based on tonight only: I am very unimpressed.

Was it just me, or did he look like the worst player on the court? Not even offensivly, which, Dallas people warned us that he was bad, but in our own end he was pretty bad too. Jonas Valanciunas schooled him a few times.

He needs baseball mits or something. His length is definitely a bonus on both ends, he'll find his way. ......

I think.

Yea..he was pretty bad tonight. I'm hoping it was a one game deal tho. You would think he cant play that great preseason, and actually be that bad.

Think Happy Thoughts, lol

Eh, I still like Hibbert and his deal much better. If Hibbert were at almost any other position, I would probably have let him walk. But, alas, he's not only a starting caliber center, but he's a well rounded one.

he showed enough in practice and preseason that Plumlee and Pendergraph were both inactive for game one in favor of extra point guards in case Hill struggled. of course it was Ian who struggled against the experienced Euro-bigs of Toronto. let's see what he does against Charlotte.

While I do agree with JNZook that this was probably (hopefully) just one game jitters by Mahinmi, but, him beating out Plumlee and Pendergraph i don't think is very tell either. Plumlee wasn't anything on Duke in college, and Pendergraph has been injured or a healthy scratch most of his Pacers career.
