Mickael Pietrus

Mickael Pietrus (G-F, Free Agent)

Pietrus put together a solid campaign for the Boston Celtics last season and over the course of his career has proven to be a 3-point shooter who commands respect and a defensive stalwart. Back in 2008, Pietrus signed a four-year worth in excess of $20 million, and although he played for the Celtics last season on a minimum contract, his agent has been steadfast in declaring that Pietrus is not a “minimum player.”

As true as that may be, Pietrus and agent Bill McCandless are amongst the losers this offseason. As of this moment, it appears that Pietrus is headed overseas to continue his career, and that’s a shame considering he gave the Celtics meaningful minutes en route to taking the eventual champion Heat to a Game 7.

Was wondering if our FO
would be interested in
taking a good look at him.

I'd welcome his addition,
if ever.

Pietrus is a vet with a rep
for solid perimeter D,
3-ball range, and character.

The wing rotation will
surely be set (and deep)
with him, esp. come
the playoffs.

Your thoughts.

I think our FO took a look at the list of free agents and probably talked to a lot of player agents and decided to sign Green and Augustine. I don't think we're looking further although I'm sure they keep their eyes open 365 days a year.

I dont see where the minutes for Pietrus could come from. In my opinion he's more of a small forward than a two. The team already has Granger; Green; and George to eat all those minutes at the 3. George and Stephenson will eat most of the minutes at the 2; with Hill playing the 2 sparingly. I just dont think Pietrus is an end of the bench type of guy. He would be unhappy with playing time in Indy. However the team could use a veteran point guard for emergency purposes.

Veteran point guards still out there include:

Baron Davis, Derek Fisher (probably would want more PT than we'd give him), Jonny Flynn, Manny Harris, Lester Hudson (who played extremely well in stretches last year), Royal Ivey, Jannero Pargo (who has had some nice seasons in the NBA), and Ish Smith (who I really like given his limited minutes in Houston, Orlando, and Memphis). Any of those would be good bargains considering their role, playing time, and paycheck.

Another free agent who would likely be had for cheap is Sam Young. He hasn't had a lot of consistent opportunities in the league yet, spending most of his career so far with Memphis. But from what I've heard he's a good guy, a big beefy physical player, can play bigger than his size (sort of like a Chuck Hayes), and is an extremely hard worker/blue collar guy and a good teammate. A bit of a tweener at 6'6" and not super quick, but because he can play bigger than his size, he can cover a handful of 2's, a number of 3's, and a number of 4's in spurts.

C - Roy Hibbert, Ian Mahinmi, Miles Plumlee
PF - David West, Tyler Hansbrough, Jeff Pendergraph
SF - Danny Granger, Gerald Green, Sam Young
SG - Paul George, Lance Stephenson, Orlando Johnson
PG - George Hill, D.J. Augustin, one of the above-mentioned veterans

I don't see young and cheap as the need at point. I see old and cheap and on the way down but willing to mentor as a much better fit. Fisher at veterans minimum would be fine. an Earl Watson type would be fine. as much as I would have preferred someone like John Lucas III over Augustin, we've made our choice now. I do see the need for an injury replacement but it needs to be someone old enough not to challenge DJ.
