West wants to re-sign

Post#1 » by Grang33r » Mon May 13, 2013 1:08 am

Saw it on wiretap-

West tells Pacers.com he wants to remain in Indianapolis and the Pacers believe they can afford him. Would be a devastating move if he leaves us this summer.

David West, the Pacers’ acknowledged locker room leader and vital power forward, becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Without question, losing the 32-year-old guru would be a blow to a team that appears to have such a promising future. Pacers’ management officials want to keep him, and believe they’ll be able to afford him, but what about West? Would he chase a larger contract elsewhere?

“I’ll address that at the end of the season and focus on finishing this year as best as possible,” he said Saturday after contributing 11 points and 12 rebounds to the Pacers’ 82-71 victory over New York at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “But I love it here, love this group of guys, this environment, love the core group that we have. This group only has room to get better.”

It would be awful if he left. But at what price? I know he's a cornerstone of our team, but he's getting up there in years and we have no idea how long he can keep this up.

No doubt I want him back, but we can't overpay.

I don't expect his performance to fall off that much over the next three years or so. But, I agree it would be a problem if he costs so much that Stephenson couldn't be resigned next summer.

West's desire to stay makes complete sense. But, if the spread between what the Pacers can pay and another offer is say 3-4 million/year over a 3 to 4 year contract. That's a lot of money and by NBA standards West has never had the big payday. Can't blame him if he were to follow the money and couldn't blame the Pacers if they let him go. Sure hope it doesn't come to that, I've come to really like the guy and his game.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you think Lance will be seeking?

A couple things. Don't forget that next summer, Danny Granger comes off the books. I know there will still be a lot tied to Roy, Hill, PG, and hopefully West, but still. It all depends on how much of a jump he continues to make next year. Let's say progresses about the same as year 2 to year 3. $3-4 million a year range you think?

I would like the Pacers to re-sign West at a similar contract he just had with the team.

For Stephenson, i wouldn't be surprised if we sign him for 4 years @ $20 mil. Barring any injury, or immaturity issues, this guy has nowhere to go but up, he will keep on improving.

It all depends on next year. He took a HUGE leap this year in terms of production and maturity. Heck, his defensive play in these playoffs has been astonishing to me. If he takes another huge leap forward and turns into the scorer we know he could be, and maintains a defensive presence and team mindset, he could be in for huge money.

Is it more worth it to sign West at a higher price and then trade Granger's expiring deal + Stevenson's potential for a scoring shooting guard or SF to complement PG?
What would build a championship team faster? At some point the future has to be now. I think next season may be that season.

This is what I thought. I don't think there's even a remote chance he signs with us for 3 mil per year.

On West, I think the max we should pay him is 3 years @ 30 mil. Anymore than that, and I think we're overpaying.

If Stephenson builds on this year I could see it being significantly higher.
