Bird was asked about qualifying offers at the end of the Hill press conference (it's online at pacers.com) and said we'd made one for Hansbrough. he was then asked which one and laughed and said Ben but I took that as a joke. sounds like Pendi and Ben didn't get one, this keeps our options open. I'm not sure of the rules but it may also make him tradable at the offer price.

Correct. We extended a QO to Tyler, but none to Pendergraph or Ben.

However, this doesn't preclude us from re-signing Pendy or Ben, nor does it guarantee that we re-sign Tyler. We merely have retained the right to match any offer for Tyler in this free agency period, while keeping a one year, $4.135m offer that Tyler could sign at any moment after July 10, of that we could ultimately retract. In the meantime, Tyler will have a cap hold of $7.6m against our salary cap, while David West has a cap hold of $13m. We are over the salary cap, and would have to use the MLE of roughly $5m or the BAE of roughly $2.5m to sign free agents in addition to vet minimum contracts.

yes but Tyler's cap hold can be eliminated immediately should we need room to sign a serious target. correct me if I'm wrong, but none of this really bites until the 10th when contracts can actually be signed which means we can make higher offers now knowing we can make them legal by renouncing Tyler and by signing DWest to a contract lower than his current hold before the offer becomes a contract after the 10th.

We can rescind his qualifying offer, and then renounce his rights to clear his cap hold, yes. However, if West signs for anything OVER $6.5m, we would be over the salary cap. Otherwise, a cap hold just floats out there until we either sign the player to a firm number, the player signs elsewhere, or we renounce the player's rights.

Tax numbers aren't figured out until the end of the season, so technically, it only affects how much you can spend in free agency.

I like the position of having the option sign him by the 10th or rescind the qualifying offer pending upgrades. Hopefully the team is able to make an upgrade on a vet minimum deal (ie. Brand or O'Neal).

With news of West re-signing, reports are now confirming that we have rescinded the Qualifying Offer to Tyler Hansbrough. As of now, Tyler is now an unrestricted free agent, and we no longer reserve the right to match any offers. We do, however, still have the right to work out a S&T.

I got to say I will miss the hustle of Hansborough; but he just was never consistent on offense. He had the Team first attitude and a hell of a motor. Hopefully Plumlee can replace that with more consistent offense and less fouls. Hopefully the team is able to lure at least one vet min big as an insurance policy.

It will be interesting to see who has interest and what Tyler can command in the market. He does not have starter talent. Yet, to be effective he has to get 20+ minutes per game and/or start. I'm not sure that combination works. I always liked the way he left it all on the floor but there was almost no improvement in his game from his rookie season. When we drafted him I expected to see some improvement based on his reputation for hard work.
