Current salary situation - one more roster spot

Hoopsworld has the salary info with Copeland's deal included:
http://www.hoopsworld.com/indiana-pacers-team-salary

$68.2 mill with 14 filled slots. That should put the team about $3mill under the tax line.

I'm thinking that the team will leave the spot open and the money available at this point. May as well have some room to move in a trade later.

If Fredette is a target he could squeeze into the current roster and the Pacers could move cash and/or a pick or two for him. Rumor has it that Sacramento is making both he and Chuck Hayes available for nothing.
"The Kings also remain in the hunt for Ellis, according to Stein, who says Sacramento has been shopping Jimmer Fredette and Chuck Hayes to the Cavaliers in an effort to clear the necessary cap room."

Oh, and Sloan's salary is marked as non-guaranteed so that could free up another $900K. Lance is also non-guaranteed, but I just don't see that waiver happening.

It's better to just consider Sloan's $900k then not, because even if they cut him for whatever reason, they'll sign Ben Hansbrough back as 3rd Point Guard. Sloan looked pretty solid last night in his first summer league game though.

I think Hayes would satisfy more need than Fredette unless Green is moved. you need 5 bigs on the active roster and currently we only have that if Miles proves worthy. early summer league signs are good but he's been playing center. I want to see him get some minutes at power forward.

I would like to see us add another big, ideally a post player who can play both PF and C.

I think the team should sign a vet min big (ring chaser) that doesn't mind the possibility of being out of the rotation but is ready when necessary. After watching the game y-day its obvious that Plumlee is ready to play; he wont be a scoring machine but he will do what is expected (rebound; adjust shots; make dunks/layups and free throws). Add in the fact that Mahinmi does his job and improves with another year in the system and you have a solid front defensively off the bench. They also will have Copeland/Granger eating minutes at the 4 with Granger more based on defensive assignments.

Likely 48 min Rotations

Hill(30 or more min)/Watson(10-15 min)
George(30-40 min)/Stephenson(20-30 min)/G. Hill
Granger(30 min)/George/S. Hill (probably more garbage time, injury, or foul trouble)
West (30 min)/Plumlee(8-10 min)/Copeland (8-10min)
Hibbert(30-40 min)/Mahinmi (8-10)

Elton Brand may be a guy that would take the vetmin to play on a solid contender.

Brand would be nice. ox strong and can still score.
Hayes can be pretty effective guarding bigs.
I'd be happy with either.
But if Plum can D at the 4 spot we may need neither and hold the spot open.
But could be also someone from SL sticks?

If we dont get Brand, sign some unguaranteed summer league guy.

Brand and Jermaine O' Neal tops my list. The Pacers need experience in the post, someone who can do what David West does.

JO is at the bottom of my list. actually I'm not sure I have a list as I'm getting comfortable with the 14 we have, but if I had one JO wouldn't be on it.

Yeah, JO can't come back here. He's a great pickup for anyone who gets him because PHX revived his career, but it's just best if we stay away from him.

Lou Amundson has been waived (I think) by New Orleans. Energetic blue-collar guy that Bird himself brought in, been in Vogel's system and can play part of a normal/bigger or smaller lineup when called upon. And probably could be had for well under the $3-ish million we have left. Non-guaranteed contract, perhaps, so it would be easy to throw him into a trade or cut him if a trade happened.

Always liked him and fans seemed to like him as well. Eh?

Lou was barely in the NBA last year. Spent most of the year unemployed. His contract expired in New Orleans, as it was a vet minimum's deal.

If Lou makes it anywhere this year, it will be a vet minimum's salary. I'm not sure he does anything above what we're asking or expecting Plumlee to handle.

Yeah, though Lou was a fan favorite, he didn't bring much besides effort and energy. Not worth bringing him back at this point, in my opinion.

we might be able to play for a month and see where we are and still sign Lou.

^ Lou would be nice as we all know what he brings, but honestly he lacks the offense we need to back-up David West. Plumlee is still raw in the post and Copeland would probably get minutes if we need to spread the floor. No unsigned rookie is worthy of what we are looking for. Post players like Brand and JO learned from experience. And I don't see a lot of these kind of big men in the free agency. Lucky if Brand comes in cheap, but I doubt it.

Maybe Elton realizes his time is near and has taken into consideration that he has made over a tenth of a billion dollars in his career. There might be a chance he takes less for personal satisfaction at this point.

I'd be happy to land him, and could see him on the floor with West or Hibbert. He'd easily be our 3rd best post player, with enough ability to be the most effective on occasion.

A guaranteed role on a contender is worth more than a few million at this stage, unless he is like Fatoine Walker.

you can only dress 13. if you sign a Brand, you probably can't dress Plumlee. Hill is going to have to fight Green for a uniform as it is unless you don't dress three point guards which I think is risky. we dressed Ben last year (Granger and Plumlee were the inactives) and I can't see Sloan not dressing this year. is it really worth signing a vet for #15?

I'd hope we are confident enough in Hill and Watson to not dress Sloan most nights. Then, Probably sit at least one of OJ, Green, or Solo if we are at 15.
