I have been thinking about a trade of Brandon Rush for Gerald Green with Indiana and 2 first round picks.

I think the market might say thats too many picks but it seems fair to me... but given that we were the ones that actually screwed up the market by paying 24M for 2 picks it might seem off a bit, but let me explain. First we took on 24M that we had to spend, got guys that actually do fill needs, and we got unprotected picks from a historically weak team that is an ankle away from the lottery.

Memphis gave up a 1st rounder at the trade deadline for around $4M in capspace last year and it seems like if you take on one extra year of salary the standard reimbursement is a 1st rounder... in fact Pelton and others criticized O'Connor last summer for taking on M Williams for Devin Harris without insisting that we get one of their 2 picks in this years draft. (Which could have netted us Schroeder to give competition to Burke) (I Wrote at the time that it was likely KOC being nice because I hypothesized that we had a deal set up to give them our TPE for Marvin straight up and one of their 1's, but then suddenly we got in on the Mo Williams deal and used our TPE in that deal and when we came back to Atlanta with Harris for M WIlliams that KOC didn't have the heart to still get the pick.

Anyway, Giving Rush to Indiana straight up is worth a 1st rounder. He gives them much needed scoring off the bench. He gives them an alternative guy to re-up after next season in case the asking price for stephenson gets too high. He gives them much needed 3 pt shooting which they lack and defense... he helps put them over the top as a championship contender and if Granger can't come back from injury he helps there too.

He also takes off $3.5M of dead weight (in G. Green) off their cap for next summer and allows them to potentially sign both He and Stephenson to lessen the loss of Granger next summer... something they couldn't do because of their cap situation if they had Greens' money on the books.

So to me: 1 First Rounder for Rush, 1 for taking on the dead weight salary for 2 years. Both picks would be lottery protected: 2014, 2016.

Thoughts?

green and a 2015 1st (top 10 protected for eternity) for Rush could be doable. Two first? GTFO

Yeah I like Rush a lot, he is level headed and can play some useful D. But as OnFire states, he would take away minutes from other guys that I'd like to see this year (Orlando Johnson and Solo) and if Granger is healthy (we have no reason to believe otherwise at the moment) he won't see the floor any more than GG would do.

Sure it would get shut of Green, but I'm not sure that need is bigger than a first rounder next year, certainly not for the next two years.

A trade of Green and a 1st for Rush might look great next summer if Stephenson can't be resigned. In the mean time a trade package of Green and a first for something cheaper might be better if it allowed for the Stephenson resigning. Too early to pull the trigger on something like this now.

We've already upgraded scoring off the bench this year with Granger coming back. We also have a 3 man rotation on the wings with George, Granger, and Lance that will chew up essentially all the minutes, with Copeland getting the rare few, or OJ, leftover.

Either way, we're talking about $7m here, that Green is owed. This isn't $21m from Jefferson and Biedrins.

Lastly, Rush has already been moved from here for energy and effort issues. I don't think Bird would have any interest in getting him back at this time, especially if he's solely competing just to be playing every 3rd night.

Also, keep in mind that Memphis gave up 1 future 1st that is heavily protected until eternity to get under the luxury tax. They paid extra for that. We aren't over the tax and dying to get under it. We're safe right now. At the time, Memphis had no idea they were still going to deal Rudy, so they paid a high price to get under the tax while they could. And they gave up 1 pick. And they dealt away a player roughly on the same tier of Rush in Speights. I don't see Rush holding a premium over that.

Why should Indy give up 2 1sts just to get rid of Green, especially for a has been like Rush?

Here is what Bird should do in regards to Green. He should wait until he is an expiring contract then try to move him. If that doesn't work he can stretch provision the remaining 3.5 over three years. Right Scoot?

Yup. The stretch provision allows you to spread the cap hit over his remaining years, times 2, plus 1.

Thus. 1 year remaining x 2 = 2 + 1 = 3 years the cap hit is stretched. Thus, his cap hit would be about $1.16m per year over 3 years. It would suck to keep him on the books that long, but it would prevent you from overpaying to dump him.

If he were making Kendrick Perkins money, it would be a different story. Either way, we'll figure something out, and we'll be ok.

My thoughts exactly ^^^^^^^. Rush isnt needed here. I would rather keep Green than give up 2 1st round picks for a guy who isnt still in Indiana because he didnt do what he was supposed to do. I would only consider the deal with one pick bc Rush is a free agent at seasons end. And he doesnt replace Stephenson in any way. He more than likely walks for nothing. He isnt a creator. Stephenson is better for what the team needs.

and Green is a member of this team and it is a team where everyone likes each other and we are told talks to each other every day during the season. I am confident that his friends in the locker room are encouraging him to work on his game over the summer and telling him exactly what he needs to do to get minutes. he has a ton of athletic ability. I'm not willing to bet first round picks against the possibility of his improvement.
