2014 NBA Draft Pick #57
Hard to get excited on this but we are still going to use this draft pick to address a need.
At 57, Larry could, and probably would, go for the best player available. But filling a need wouldn't be a stretch either at this point late in the draft. Thoughts?

Re: 2014 NBA Draft Pick #57
Here's some players I think Larry could be looking at. Not that I want them, just some kinda realistic options I am thinking, considering Larry's drafting criteria - senior, mature, hard working, good character, role player.
Jordan Bachynski, C, Arizona St., Sr.
Patric Young, PF/C, Florida, Sr.
Cameron Bairstow, PF, New Mexico, Sr.
Aaron Craft, PG, Ohio State, Sr.
Russ Smith, PG, Louisville, Sr.
Lamar Patterson, SG/SF, Pittsburgh, Sr.
Joe Harris, SG/SF, Virginia, Sr.
Fuquan Edwin, SG/SF, Seton Hall, Sr.
Sean Kilpatrick, SG, Cincinnati, Sr.
All this time, up to this point, I am still convinced that we will end up with Bachynski. Eery I know, but if Larry wants a worker, this guy's got to be near the top of his list. Not saying it is a bad thing, but with the lack of centers in this year's draft, they are overshadowed with the pool of wingmen in the same mold.
I think this draft will determine the faith of LaVoy Allen and Donald Sloan. If we get a point guard in the draft, then Sloan's gone. I always wanted LaVoy Allen, but we'll never know if we can keep him financially. So if we get a PF in the draft, it would likely be his replacement. Solomon Hill is still under contract and in a developmental stage. And it is hard to imagine Larry wanting a rookie to be THAT scorer off the bench. He must be looking at the free agency market for that player, Jodie Meeks for example. I just don't think we can afford another year to develop another wing, unless we can get someone like a Roy Marble or Deandre Kane, who somehow has upside. Bottom line, it is hard not to see Larry targeting a role player in this draft. He always does.

I know im probably dreaming big; but I watched the NCAA tourney this past year and thought to myself; this dude would be a hell of a weapon coming off the bench. Is there any chance he comes out this year? Maybe a late first rounder? Indy needs a guy who can impact a game like him. A stretch 5 with a post game and a pretty decent defender as well. I would try to deal a future 1st in a heartbeat to land back in the first round and get a guy like Kaminsky.

On a more realistic note; Bachynski is a decent shot blocker; Craft was a excellent on the ball defending in the tourney; I like the potential of Patterson and Smith. Both guys can create offense and create there own shot. I would workout Russ Smith a few times to get a good feel for the type of player he is. He would probably be the best pick out of that list. He seems to have some steal potential. Although I expect for Bird to draft a Euro project.

I think that we should start searching for David West's replacement. It's possible that he retires when his contract ends and thus grooming a replacing for him sounds like a good idea. A shooter would also be nice.

Patric Young would be an awesome pick. If we're looking for West's replacement, Young played exactly like David West at Florida. Physical, doesn't back down, good jumper, decent post game. He'd be ideal at #57 imo.

Deonte Burton and Jahii Carson are two more second round point guard names. don't be surprised though to see us buy into the late first or early second round which could put Napier in reach.

I think Patric Young will likely be gone by then. Russ Smith may be there and I could see us taking him.

Re: 2014 NBA Draft Pick #57
I like Patric Young, only if we are not going to re-sign Lavoy Allen. Russ Smith is my favorite out of the fringe late 2nd rounders to undrafted guys. Just guessing it could either be a center or a point guard, and that we would be looking at the free agency for anything in between these positions.
If we are looking at a possible replacement for David West, Lavoy Allen could be that guy. Bairstow intrigues me as somewhat like a Luis Scola clone. He's probably not going to slip that far in the second round though.

I wonder if there's any plans to try and bring Stanko Barac over, doubt it or we would have heard something, but you never know. I wonder where Magnum Rolle is now too, could have put on some more muscle and added some skill since we had him in summer league.

I wish they had kept Magnum over Solomon Jones. He would probably be a much better player now. He was talented; kind of reminded me of Camby of course a poor mans.

Magnum Rolle would be ace, just for his name.
According to wikipedia Barac signed a 3year deal in Turkey, in 2011.... But he isnt even a starter for them as far as I can work out.

Vogel is Dutch for Bird.

I think at that point, you need to look at a stretch big. Even if he's a Terrence Jones-lite, just to hang with and keep the Bosh's and Millsap's of the league honest.
Remember Magnum Rolle? That guy who Jim O'Brien touted so highly in training camp a few years back, yet inexplicably played him about 8 minutes a game in the preseason.

What do you think about Christian Watford? He is a talented guy with a very good touch from 3. Any chance that Indy brings him in for a tryout this year. Seems like the kinda guy that San Antonio would sign now and in two years he is a thorn in your side comparable to Danny Green.

Loved Watford at IU, but the guy doesn't have any NBA game. He's a tweener whose only marketable skill is the 3-ball, and he couldn't defend an NBA power forward (or small forward, for that matter) to save his life. Michael Beasley-lite, probably.

Watford would be a homer pick and nothing more. I would agree I like him while he was at IU, but I don't see him getting drafted. There are a lot more talented players than him in this draft class.

Watford was in last year's draft class... right? I think SmashMouthRod was talking about inviting him to camp or something like that, not drafting him.

Yeah Watford went undrafted last season; he is a guy that played Overseas this past season; and likely got better. He will also likely be in a summer league uni as well and I was just wondering if a guy that can shoot it like him could end up being a decent all around player in a couple years considering he is only 23. Vogel is a good developer/motivator of talent and I believe he could probably make two or three talented young guys into decent hustle energy players off the bench.

Watford will be in SOMEONE'S summer league, but not a likely candidate to make a roster.
