Pacers Re-Sign Lavoy Allen

Post#1 » by Scoot McGroot » Sat Jul 5, 2014 4:14 pm

Per Chris Broussard and confirmed by Candace Buckner of the Indystar.

No word on finances yet. Also, Buckner states this still doesn't affect status of Lance's offer and that it's on the table still.

Currently, we now have under contract:
Hill/Watson/Sloan
Miles
George/Hill/Rudez
West/Scola/Copeland
Hibbert/Mahinmi/Allen/Whittington

Just Lance out there left, or possibly another wing signing to fill out the roster. Also, have to assume that at least one of Copeland, Scola, or Whittington will not be on he roster by opening day.

How is the Lance offer still on the table? Signing him would put us well into the luxury tax, no?

Anyway, happy about this signing. Lavoy should be a solid backup for us, hopefully he gets more minutes this year.

Have to imagine that Bird has a deal lined up if Lance accepts to dump Cope or Scola for nothing. Shouldn't be hard at all with the amount of money teams have been throwing around. Or maybe even Ian if they're convinced that Lavoy can cover the backup center minutes.

Who knows what will happen once the big free agents start signing, but it seems plausible than Lance won't find a better deal out there. I'd imagine someone would have offered it by now if they wanted him and I don't see the teams who strike out on Lebron/Melo/Bosh offering him big money either.

I know we seem to say this every year, but (if Lance stays), we could have a vastly improved bench with Miles and improvement from Hill (hopefully).

Ha, I'm done saying our bench will be better this year. I drank the kool aid 2 years ago with Gerald Green and did it again last year with Watson and Scola.

To be honest, our bench will probably suck again this year and probably always will.

But we can hope.

Yeah I'm in an optimistic mood, but more than likely within a few weeks into the season I'll want to trade the entire bench for cap space. At the very least it looks like there will be some continuity this year though with Watson and likely Scola being back, plus Hill though he didn't play really.

Im happy with this move. Im rooting for Allen to take Mahinmi's minutes. Im also hoping that Solomon is as good as they are stating. The final chip to the puzzle Lance needs to sign his deal although I can understand how he probably feels. He may be an all-star next season making 8M. All-stars dont get paid 8M. But im wondering if any other team would provide the environment for him to play as free; resulting in the triple doubles he gets almost nightly.

Gotta assume that there's other deals on the table to clear space, especially since we're hard capped at $81m now, and can't go over that at any point for any reason.

luxury tax isn't calculated until the end of the season so leaving the offer on the table does not incur tax. lots of time to get back under the tax if Lance signs the offer.

I like this perspective in regards to the tax. Guys like Mahimi, Cope and Scola can easily be traded. Also, imagine if Hibbert starts strong his value will be restored as a top big, then we can easily trade him for a small fortune. Therein lies the predicament, I find it extremely difficult to entertain a trade when Hibbert is playing well.

True, but waiting until mid season to get under the tax line would be really risky.

Absolutely. Much easier for teams to stare you down and demand another pick or two, knowing how desperate you are to use them and only days, or minutes, left on the clock.

Also, now that Lavoy has been signed, it's been announced he won't participate in summer league.

Scowls seems easiest to trade. Easy buyout if he's part of a team's plans and a steady veteran on an expiring deal if not. I want to keep Cope and play him as the sharpshooter , if nothing else to sweeten his expiring deal in trade talks.

I'd also much rather have Cope. Scola's terrible mid range jumper and lack of defense combined with plain bad interior offense makes him a dime a dozen. Cope at least brings his 3 pointer to the table. And he's a fan favorite, he got standing ovations nearly every time he stepped on the court.

Scola is probably easier to move because of his reduced cap hit if he is cut.

But we haven't heard a peep about any trade whatsoever. You'd think this far into free agency if Bird planned on moving one of these guys in the off-season we would have heard some rumors by now.

I would much rather keep Scola but he clearly has a lot more value then Copeland, especially with his buyout option. Sure it wouldnt be a problem dumping him if we had too.

My money is on Lance accepting our offer by the end of next week, I dont see more money/better situation out there for him then here, I think Larry actually priced the market exactly right on this one.

I'm betting Scola is gone at some point and Whittington since I hear he's out for most of the season. Also I'd see Allen as a 4/5 not just a 5.

Is $81 million the Luxury Tax Threashold? I thought it was more like $77 million for 2014-15. I still think there may be a deal sitting out there for Hibbert or George Hill. We need a better PG period. If the right deal could be made I'd trade them both. I can think of teams that would take Hibbert for his defensive ability but I'm hard pressed for a realistic place to move Hill.

$77 is the luxury tax line, but with our using the full MLE AND the BAE this year, we've triggered a "hard cap" at the apron, which is $4m over the luxury tax line. We cannot go over $81m at any time, even if we later make a move to get under it. Just something to keep in mind if we pull any trades and re-sign Lance, as it would affect the order we'd have to make certain moves in.
