Darren Collison scouting report

Post#1 » by Koorverfor3 » Sat Jul 5, 2014 10:25 pm

Big Demarcus Cousins fan here, always wished the Kings got him a pass first pg to play alongside with. Anyway wanted to pick your brains over the recent Darren Collison signing and wanted to address his stats in context.

He set the league by suprise his rookie year, Chris Paul went down and the solid Hornets squad didn't miss a beat. He averaged 16/7/1.3 steals per 36.

Next season he kept up with nearly identical per 36 numbers under Jim Obrian.
In 2012 his production looked to have taken a nose dive under Frank Vogel during his first year as a coach.
He had a bounce back with the Clippers and I'm interested if under the right situation he can get back to that promising player he was his first 2 seasons in.

I remember out of college he made his mark as a pesky defender with lightning quick skills. He was also known as a high Iq guy. I'm hearing grumblings that he is a liability on defense..Is it because of size or what?
How is he running a team? Did Vogel and Rick Carlisles slow pace system not suit him?
Appreciate your analysis

I think it's size, but he was just an awful defender. Otherwise, he's an ok ball handler on the NBA level, but to be a good player, needs the ball in his hands A LOT. For that reason, he's great as a backup or starting with lesser players. I imagine he'll be a disappointment to you guys, only because you signed him with expectations to start, and he'll prove he's merely a great bench player. Or, he'll hold the ball too much and get his teammates angry.

Collison is very inconsistent one day he looks great the next day he looks like he needs to go to the DLeague.

Dead on assessment. Also he is a pick and roll/pop guy; he plays best off overloading defenses on star players. If Cousins and or Gay can draw double coverage at any time; or force a zone. Collison will play well. But I thought Sac wouldve been better to keep Isaiah. I would say I. Thomas is better.

Couldn't have said it better myself. He's a good pick and roll player and can shoot the ball well in mid-range. His D is a liability and he needs to ball in his hands a lot to do damage.

I always liked Darren a lot. I thought that people were unfair to him while he was in Indiana since our system was never good for PGs.

He certainly has some defensive issues due to his size. On the other hand, he is a good PnR player, a good shooter and he's also very quick with the ball. He can help a team offensively. He has always been good as a spark off the bench but he was also a decent starter as well.

I don't know if Sacramento is the right fit for him, though. In any case, I wish him all the best :D
