Saw this on the wiretap.

Not really sure why Indiana wants him with the frontcourt loaded with forwards. Not to mention CJ Miles can also play forward. But on the other hand, I think he's different from what we have here, he's more of a rebounding combo forward, unlike the shooters we have on board in Copeland and Rudez.

It will only make sense if we are to dispose one of our wings. Otherwise, it will be just an unnecessary purchase.

do we have a non-guaranteed contract other than Sloan and Scola's partial?

I think Whittington is non-guaranteed.

I would assume Sloan is highly waive-able with the Stuckey addition, and I have to think that there are plenty of possible trade partners for Copeland. I wonder if Bird's in a holding pattern waiting for Love to be moved. If he's looking at Rondo, I think Boston is still waiting to see what they need to counter from Cleveland and GSW. If they don't get Love I have to think that Rondo's on the move, either now or mid-season.

SIngleton would be signed to compete with Solo and Rudez as a 3. He is known for being a great defender with a high motor. He especially showed this attribute in college where he won DPOY. Dives for loose balls and plays with grit. Can hit the three pointer and play some 4 so he can be considered a stretch 4 as well. He is the type of hustle and energy guy that can be a fan favorite off the bench. I like the idea. If he doesnt play; he will at least put some pressure on Solo to play harder. I personally think Frank would like this guy considering that he liked Sam Young. Singleton is better. A good comparison is probably James Johnson.

Given the signing of Rudez who is a pretty redundant skillset relative to Copeland I'd guess the Pacers have found a taker for Cope. Sounds like Stapleton would give us someone who can step out and aggressively guard the stretch 4. Even with all the forwards on the roster I think we are still somewhat exposed by a 4 who can shoot from distance and has the handle to drive.

If so, we're about 2 weeks late in doing the deal. No real point now.

Especially since we know what we have with Cope and he's a guy you don't mind giving minutes to despite his limitations. He at least tries hard. We have no idea what Rudez will do, if anything. And it seemed like Vogel finally started to figure out how to use him at the end of the season.

Trading Cope would be pretty pointless now unless someone wants to give us picks or a young prospect. Cap space does nothing for us now and our roster is pretty filled in all positions unless he's part of a larger deal.

That being said, I wouldn't mind Singleton, just don't see where he really fits right now. Would kind of rather look at guys who have been in the league awhile and could be a player-coach kind of guy and not mind sitting the majority of the time.

Yup. Can't imagine that Singleton is really a possibility here unless we do some sort of 2 for 1 kind of trades and clear roster spots. Though, I guess it's possible we could waive Scola and sign Singleton to the vet minimum, all while saving $2m for this season in possible trades, and run an offense/defense platoon backing up West of Cope/Singleton.

I think most likely scenario is giving him some small guaranteed money or just doing a camp invite and having him battle it out with Whittington for the last spot. I just don't see Bird buying out Scola after giving so much to get him (and reportedly wanting him for awhile).

Maybe the idea is to do the offense/defense thing with him and Rudez where one is always inactive.

I still really think we're fine with our backup forwards now and Singleton isn't an elite defender or anything. I'd rather see Solo Hill get those minutes at backup SF and I don't think Singleton's got the size to be a PF defender for much time.

That's what I heard at first, but there's been conflicting info since. Seems he might be back shortly after camp. Who knows? Management hasn't had one word to say about him yet.

Haven't seen any other report aside from that he will be missing significant time. Would love to see him in camp and gauge how he will fit as a stretch five.

Unless you want someone on the roster who can step out and defend the more mobile, 3 point shooting threat playing pf that we are seeing more and more in the league. Do we have a single guy coming off the bench at that position that has demonstrated an ability to step out on the floor and guard a mobile dual threat player?

Mike Scott and Al Harrington both hurt us in the playoffs last year when we just didn't have anyone with the skill set to defend them. We will still have to deal with LeBron James and I notice that at times San Antonio would use their mobile 4 (Boris Diaw) with some success defending James.

I don't know if Singleton is the guy but we sure could have used someone with Danny Granger's defensive skill set in the playoffs.

I still think that Chris Copeland would do fine against those guys. Apparently, he's lost 20 pounds, had his knee cleaned out, and is rocking it at 220 this summer. Even without taking those into account, the key to Harrington and Scott killing us is that they're the "forgotten men". I think Cope would do fine against those guys simply with his length and by focusing on them. Otherwise, maybe even a Solo Hill stepping up to guard those guys.

My guess as to why they are considering him is because they have Paul and Solo as 3's without a doubt. Rudez is a 3/4 with no reputation for being a defender. Miles will likely start at the 2 and will mainly man the 2. Stuckey is only a 1 or 2. There is a little uncertainty at the 3 because Cope cant play the position; Rudez isnt a defender and if an injury comes into play (with Paul or Solo) another guy may be needed for mainly defense.

I think we have plenty of guys who can defend the arc they just don't include Roy or Ian. the problem is not who can defend those guys but who do our centers guard when the other team's center is out at the arc. my answer is to play a match-up zone so our centers can stay in the paint. however, you can wait until the playoffs to practice it. you also can't wait until the playoffs to practice an offense against a zone.

Agree. I mean, we do not really have a decent defender at the 3 spot aside from PG. Singleton is someone the Pacers do not have - a 3/4 forward who can play and defend inside and out. Most of our guys are shooters and I think Cope is too slow to defend the 3. He lost weight, and maybe more mobile now but I don't see him matching up well with a guy like Paul Millsap who can either post up or shoot from way beyond.

I think Solo can do some defending on the smaller 3's, but with the combo forwards, I am not sure.

Vogel has said some good things about Solo's defense.

He's never been a stretch 5. Shayne may be a bit undersized (only 237 pounds), but he played like a classic interior 5. Never really stepped out of the paint.

Holy. I thought we signed him because he's different from Hibbert and Mahinmi? Never really know this guy but if that's the case then we'll have very little use of him.
