Vogel signs "multi-year" extension

Was entering the final year of his deal. No word on length, but at least two more years added on.

I'm happy to hear about this. It's always a distraction when these situations linger. Bird definitely keeps the team running smoothly and this is just an example of that.

Pretty indifferent.

He's a great locker room coach I think, all the guys respect him, no doubt about it.

However, his strategies leave a lot to be desired. Defense has been good (mostly due to straight up personnel) but the offense has always been atrocious with Vogel. Tons of iso-ball, no moving without the ball, just a whole lot of half-assed pick and rolls.

We'll see.

I agree that Vogel's offensive sets lack creativeness, maybe the key is to get another offensive minded lead assistant, like Shaw.

Regardless, we're about to witness his level of ability as he will be put through a rigorous test this season, but I have confidence in him. Remember, before Vogel took over our franchise was in the gutter. He believed long before anyone else did. What were SVG's words after Obie was fired, something like, 'that's why Indiana will always suck.'

We've come a long way under Vogel. The notion that he has maxed-out his ability is not plausible as we nearly made it to the finals, and he is still young and learning too.

Looking at last season, when was it as exciting to be a Pacer fan? 2000? 2003?

The exact date was November 19th, 2004, I believe.

Here's what a lot of people allow for when it comes to players and not coaches: growth. You guys know that every season Vogel is actually becoming a better coach, right? He's confident, but also smart and self-aware. He knows the offense isn't clicking so he put in a lot of work this offseason to try and polish that up. This season, check out our ball movement. I think the most underrated part of Vogel is is potential as a coach. Fans are too fickle and impatient with their coaches. It's very difficult to get an entire team to change offensive strategies in the middle of a season when everything's falling apart. You just don't have the practice time. Give it this season to see if the offensive system improves or not.

Yup, he's definitely a top third of the league kind of coach (which makes him right at top 10). He's really good with his players in the locker room. He's also shown that he's willing to admit his faults and grow. There's been growing pains, but he's worlds better than what we would realistically want out on the open market. I'm happy to keep him. I remember just how much worse the offense was the day before Vogel took over.
