From one of my favorite HBO Sports documentaries -- Long Shots (I wish it had been 3 hours long), about the ABA:

I worked a basketball camp about 17-18 years ago with Freddie Lewis. Sweet guy. He seemed to have fallen on some hard times. It must be tough for guys like him to see the money that today's players make. He had great stories.

I'll have to try and check that out, nice find.
And to your story about Lewis, that's sad. I hope the new league and players somehow figure out a way to get retired players something from the explosion of money, but I'm not optimistic (and doubt the ABA guys would get anything). Guys who made next to nothing to help build the game/league deserve something.

Definitely. It's not only guys in the ABA days. Even in the early-mid 90s the salaries weren't completely crazy. A "legend" like Scottie Pippen made like $2.75 million on average throughout his career with the Bulls. Obviously he made bank later on with Houston and Portland but players a bit older then him never saw that kind of money. Nowadays just like Ian Mahimni make $4 million per season.
