OT-ish: Amar'e Stoudemire's retirement

Post#1 » by chube » Wed Jul 27, 2016 5:43 pm

I saw he signed with NY and then retired. I didn't think the NBA had those ceremonial one-day contracts like the NFL did. Was that part of the last round of negotiations of the CBA and I just missed it?

Because I know Jermaine O'Neal still has an affinity for the Pacers and has mentioned in the past doing a victory lap in Indy. He'd be a guy who could do a ceremonial last contract as well as Danny Granger.

Well, there's no real legality of this. It's more a "show contract". Ultimately, it's not even a true player's contract that is filed with the league, but more something that says "For one day, this person is an employee of this organization, with no work requirements, and no pay associated". Nothing that would come into play with the CBA or legalities. Same in the NFL. It's really moreso an affiliation, if you will. "New York was the last organization I signed a contract with, so I'll retire a Knick". More than anything, it's just a press conference in that city.

Ah, gotcha, thanks Scoot! I thought the NFL's one-day contracts were more official. Good info, just don't see NBA players do this as much it seems
