2017 Free Agents...

Post#1 » by basketballwacko2 » Tue Dec 20, 2016 10:14 pm

We should have a little money after signing Teague who do we go after?

Our own free agents are: Lavoy Allen (TO), Aaron Brooks, C.J. Miles (PO), Rodney Stuckey (PO), Jeff Teague.

These guys are either not guaranteed or partially guaranteed: Rakeem Christmas ($50k guaranteed), Georges Niang ($100k guaranteed), Glenn Robinson III, Kevin Seraphin, Joseph Young.

I'm fine with keeping Teague he's gonna cost us $24-26 million for 5 yrs I'm expecting.

Do we exercise the TO on Lavoy Allen?

The non guaranteed guys are all cheap roster fillers, except GRIII who might be emerging as a key piece of the pie.

I'm betting CJ and Stuckey decline their PO's, I'd have to assume we let Stuckey go and CJ is gonna finally get paid off by someone.

So if we keep the Non guaranteed guys and sign Teague we have 4 roster spots open if we decline Lavoy's TO and CJ and Stuckey decline their PO's. The team might say Allen is a cheap and decent back up PF and decide to keep him. That leaves only 3 roster spots, counting our #1 pick and 2nd round pick that leaves only 1 roster spot to till.

Do we give up on Rakeem Christmas and Joe Young? What about Niang? It would be nice if we could send the to the minors like in baseball.

What outside free agents will the Pacers be looking at? Could we get Zack Randolph? He's gonna be 36 he's still effective. I'd be ok with a 2 year deal for $12 million or so. But I don't want that getting in the way of extending Paul George.

I would definitely let Stuckey go, even though I like him. He can't seem to stay healthy and is redundant with Ellis and takes up the backup sg spot I would love to put Ellis in. Keeping Teague is a priority, but I would like to keep Miles if possible. Despite his insane streakiness he is still one of the best shooters we have. Brooks was probably a rental, but if he comes cheap then I would be okay with him returning. Young still fits the young guy with potential mold but needs to show something.

I doubt we bring back Allen who doesn't really fit what we are trying to do anymore. Christmas is hard to say. You would think if we had any confidence in him that we would have actually put him on the court by now. I would vote no on them.

I like Z-Bo but he'd be 38 by the end of that deal and will only keep declining. Plus, I'd prefer we stop giving contracts to also-rans (I know we are talking about a reserve player but still.) Scola, Ellis, and Jefferson all fit to some degree (although Jefferson seems to be settling in.)

I'd like to see the team go a little younger like a Taj Gibson. I think there is still some potential in Thomas Robinson somewhere. And if he's not traded (unlikely), Nerlens Noel could maybe be had for cheap.

I could see Larry looking for more offensive punch from a guy like Terrence Jones or Ersan Ilyasova. But next to A-Jeff, but we need some defense in that backup 4 slot

I'm not sure it'd be good, but our current starting 5 with a trio of Ellis/Jefferson/ZBo off the bench would be interesting at the least and give us quite a different look between lineups.

Randolph is still effective but he is getting up there and could decline rapidly. We need some defense in general and could really use some shooting.

I think new CBA will let us send guys to the minors next year. don't know details. Christmas has never impressed me. I think Niang and Young get another year or two I have no idea who is doing well in Ft Wayne.

How much cap space are we looking at? Any chance of getting someone like a JJ Reddick?

Teague is going to cost more than that to keep in my estimation. $10m/year is probably the floor in this new big money era.

I would doubt it. Some writers predict that with how much money is out there, he may be one to get a near-max offer

If we make playoffs:

Keep Teague, CJ, and GRIII let rest walk and draft well.

Teague/ George Hill
CJ/ Monta Ellis
George/ GRIII
Taj Gibson or Paul Millsap or Serge Ibaka/Thad Young
Myles Turner/Al Jefferson

That's 10 deep, draft well and you could have a roster 10-12 deep of actual NBA talent.

I'd say keep Teague and and GR3 regardless. GR3 still likely won't cost as much and Teague is really finding his niche and is the kind of scoring option this team has been looking for when Paul is off/sits/focused on defending the LeBrons of the world. I'd like to keep CJ but he may well be playing himself into a salary I'm not sure Indy should be paying in a couple years.

I think out of our own free agents my priority list would be as follows. Teague, CJ (we need shooting) GR3 and Brooks.

Anyone who gives JJ Redick that kind of money is crazy. Max contracts should be for star players not role players.

So you think we're gonna be able to sign George Hill to be the backup point guard?

With Ellis seeming to get accustomed to his bench role, how do we feel about him being the primary backup for both the one and the two. That way we would only have to keep a third string PG and use Brooks money elsewhere.

That way we also get more use out of Ellis and his 10 million a year too.

basically you're suggesting a 3 man backcourt rotation. that's certainly a possibility but saving a veteran minimum contract isn't going to buy you much elsewhere in the rotation. don't forget Stuckey though as he could push Brooks to the bench too. Ellis and Stuckey or Ellis and Brooks make a good second unit backcourt,

I'm not sure how many more years Joe Young gets although he was great in summer league until he got hurt. Niang's a big puzzle too. does well in Ft Wayne but looks to lack size for the 4 and speed for the 3. who we draft this summer also impacts what we'd need next fall. new CBA has additional roster spots for the D-League which should make it easier to develop talent.

if Monta is comfortable off the bench, and early results are good, I'm happy with our starting five so we're only talking about adding rotation free agents. the emergence of GRob as a 2 and Seraphin as a 4, doesn't leave a lot of free agent holes.

I'd push for Ibaka easily, using bird rights on Teague and CJ, and whatever's left on a backup 1/2.

I don't think we're gonna resign CJ Miles some team is gonna give him a big pay check. If Crabbe can get $18 million a year CJ can get at least $12-13 million and we won't be able to keep him.
