He's set to make $11.2 million in 2017-18 and they're gonna cut him any how so why not see if he'll accept a little less to get paid now. $8.5 to $9 million is my guess. DO NOT stretch it.

You think Collison will start? I was thinking he was brought in to play off the bench.

Good. This makes a lot of sense, I think.

I would bet Collison starts for us unless we end up with Corey Joseph.

Without Ellis I don't see a second unit two. It won't matter who starts if DC, Lance, and Dipo all get over 30 minutes in a three man rotation. Is Young ready for second unit minutes? Leslie? Could be GRob if we find another SF.

I really would have kept him around, but his last year here was not great. He would have been so much better had Nate just kept him in that 2nd unit ball handler role. But still, it always a problem trying to mask his shooting and defensive deficiencies. And in today's league one or the other might hurt you, but no defense and no shooting both is hard to work around. And near the end he stopped putting the ball in the bucket enough for it to make sense to try.

I thought his first year here was pretty good still, but honestly it was kind of a signing that never made the most sense for us. At the time, it took the ball out of George Hill's hands again after he had had a productive season for us. His signing always just seemed like a way for us to try to fill the whole left over from the Lance Stephenson departure, when really if we had offered Stephenson the money that we offered Ellis he probably never would have went anywhere.

Call me crazy if you will, but I still legitimately believe he can be a decent-ish point guard.

The biggest problem is he's still being played as a shooting guard when he can't shoot 3s, isn't really big enough to guard other shooting guards, definitely can't switch onto small forwards, hasn't gotten any better on defense with age. What he can do is handle the ball, distribute, and still can get to the rim some. That makes him a point guard in my book.

I'm with you. I like ellis as second unit point guard.

Monta could have been a solid PG, never got that role, so always a smallish 2 without a great 3. Early.. I LIKED his D. What happened? He's damn quick.
CENSORED... No comment.

He's pretty decent at getting in for steals every now and then. He's just too short to truly be an effective wing defender, and his rotations aren't always on point which doesn't help at all.

A buyout certainly makes sense for both parties. Here he basically would only play besides Lance or Dipo and we'd have bad shooting or he'd be play besides Collison and we'd be incredibly undersized. Odds are he'd look worse than he is in Indy and it would hurt his last payday.

I had hoped someone would have taken him on for free as a bench guard, but not with how conservative teams are being this offseason. If it's true that Cory Joseph requires an asset to dump then Monta requires a first.

I'm with you. even as a backup point he's too loose with the ball. As a wing he doesn't work at all and with the surplus of PG's in the game today l'll be surprised if he is on a roster when the season begins. Probably a place for him in China.

In retrospect this free agent signing set us back considerably in my opinion. Coupled with the Jefferson signing and it is a pretty strong statement that Larry was pretty out of touch with the overall NBA games direction.

Playing Monfa and Stuckey too much. Paul George not wanting to be here. Bringing Lance Stephenson in at the last minute like that. Sad the mess this team was last year.

I am surprised to see us waive him completely and not try to save a few million in a buyout situation, but I do think in Paul's absence that it is time to hit the reset button. I like Monta but that means him too. His performance hasn't really justified keeping him around either. I don't know how much cap space stretching his salary will save us, but I can't imagine we are in a position to be signing anyone anyways.

I would like to see him go to Dallas again. There are some players that just look good under Rick Carlisle that don't perform as well without his magic touch.

Interesting that a buyout couldn't be reached. Perhaps Monta simply demanded the full salary as he wasn't convinced of his value on the open market now?

Apparently we stretched the payoff. I don't think you can do that on a partial deal.
