Wash Post suggests Pacers get Kemba

Post#1 » by Grang33r » Sat Jan 6, 2018 6:30 am

From Washington Post NBA reporter Tim Bontemps-

For another example, the Hornets could try to work out a trade with the Pacers, who have rebounded nicely from Paul George’s departure thanks largely to the man they acquired for him, Victor Oladipo. A trade of Walker and Williams for Darren Collison, Al Jefferson, rookie forward T.J. Leaf and Indiana’s 2018 first-round pick would allow Charlotte to essentially wipe out the $29 million owed to Williams over the next two seasons (thanks to Jefferson’s non-guaranteed salary for next season). The move removes the need for Charlotte to worry about the tax, and it also would receive a rookie project in Leaf, a first-round pick and – again – a boost to its own draft pick’s status. The Pacers could pair Walker with Oladipo and Myles Turner, potentially becoming an interesting team in the East.

Some on here have suggested this already here. Would love this to happen. Thoughts?

Worth trying. Leaf isn't really getting any reasonable minutes behind Myles/Thad/Sabo anyway, DC would be upgraded and Big Al is just a locker room presence plus vet mentorship for a rather steep price.

My own feeling is that Kemba and Dipo are too similar and there would be diminishing returns in pairing them together. Defensively, there may be an issue as well since both are somewhat undersized for their positions.

pacers33granger's counter argument is that Houston has made it work with Harden and CP3, so perhaps Dipo and Kemba can work together too. Well, maybe. My counter-counter argument to that is that CP3 is significantly older than Kemba, so perhaps is more willing to play a declining role in the offense. Kemba is still in his prime and has yet to score a really big contract. So I think there are huge risks here.

That said, there will always be risks when trying to acquire another major piece. My own feeling is that the risk/reward ratio for Kemba (given what we would likely have to give up) isn't that appealing.

I like Kemba but I don't think that's at all worth it. Collison, a first rounder, and our most recent first round pick? Seems pretty steep considering his team seems to keep under performing while being in the Eastern Conference .

I also don't like Kemba's potential fit with Oladipo much.

Kemba can walk after next season so the seasons we target to start contending we could be without Kemba and likely will.

If the Hornets blow it up, I think others like Batum are better options. I like MKG too.

I thought about that as well, and certainly I don't have a basis for this belief but I believe Leaf ends up being a rotational player, and although Collison has been solid for us, I don't think he's anything more than an average pg. (I do like him, though). In my mind it ends up being a mid to late 1st round pick and maybe Leaf blossoming into a consistent starter in 3 or 4 years for Kemba. Yes, Oladipo did struggle alongside Westbrook, and while there areally similarities in Westbrook and Kemba's game, I think they are different enough that it would be ok. I don't think Kemba is nearly as selfish as Westbrook is (I say that in the most respectful way possible, Westbrook is an awesome player!)

Overall I'd rather see a better defender and shooter than Kemba at the point guard spot next to Victor. I really think if you went from Collison's 42.9% shooting from long distance this year to Kemba's 34.3%, the difference in our offense would be noticeable.

That said, depending on what guards are available and for what price and such, he might be somebody to take a glance at in free agency.

I wouldn't mind getting Kemba on the cheap, he's a serious talent. DC and CoJo are not long term starting point guards probably, but a tandem of Kemba and Oladipo is a really talented and explosive guard combination for the long term.

if all goes right, Victor and this year's draftee is the future back court. besides trade proposal gives us nothing for the tax dump aspect.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Don't know why Charlotte would do it, though. It would be the ultimate panic move for them.

Definite NO to this trade. Have never been impressed with Walker or Williams. Leaf is going to improve by leaps as he gains experience. Collison is solid, and a better fit than Walker, I believe. The draft pick will likely be a player who will contribute, as well.

This trade idea seems to only be a way for Charlotte to shed salary and rid themselves of a couple players they (or at least the writer) deem expendable. The Pacers should not be their dumping ground.

haven't seen Sumner play but looking at mocks there could be guards from Kentucky, duke, Miami, and Oregon in the 20s and In the second Villanova and even butler.

I would consider it. Kemba would expedite the rebuild and allow for the team to focus on wing talent/depth in the draft. This is especially important cuz we may lose GR3. Bogdanovic isn't the long term solution at the 3. And it became very apparent during the skid with Oladipo out.

Not sure this is a reasonable expectation. Pg’s Often take awhile to develop and you are looking at a six year window between the ages of Vic and our hypothetical draftee.

The Pacers with Al’s contract and multiple guys who are either expiring or have non-long term deals are in a nice trading position as either a buyer or seller. When healthy this is not a lottery team so getting a serious building block through the draft while not an impossibility will be tough. I would think we would be aiming for someone who is still relatively young and Walker fits that criteria.

That said I could live with Joseph and Collison for another year. The more noticeable weakness seems to me to be the 3 and D wing player.

No, I would not do that. I like Kemba but have no use for williams. The article does not mention that Collison is only Guaranteed $2 million next year as well so for $6 million they get out of the final year of Kemba's deal and the $29 million owed to Williams that's $41 million of cap space for $6 million, a net of $35 million. And the Pacers give up Leaf and the 2018 #1 pick.

If we're taking Williams, who is gonna be 32 in June, in the deal I would suggest switching the #1 to 2 2nds. Kemba would have to be extended this summer to keep him from becoming a UFA in 2019 and walking. The cap space is there but he's gonna want $24-25 million.

I would think the Hornets could do better by just moving Kemba without attaching an anchor to him in the form of Williams.

Better defender, good 3pt shooter? I hear George Hill wants out of Sac. He's paid $20 million this year, $19 million next season and $18 million for 2019-20 but the final year is only guaranteed $1 million. How about Collison and Jefferson for Hill and maybe one of their youngsters like Justin Jackson. Collison played there last year and would be a good bridge guard for Fox. The kings would get out of a mistake fairly inexpesively only owing DC and Al $6 million next season rather than $19 million to Hill.

Adding Hill to the Guard rotation would be a big up grade he is shooting 46.9% from 3 pt range this season and we know he's a good defender. I think he'd work well with Victor.

I'm gonna post this in the Trade & Trans forum for reaction.

I think George Hill and Victor Oladipo would be awesome back court partners from a fit perspective. It kinda just matters what they want for him.

I'm also a sucker for "getting the band back together" 8-)
